An apologetic Imus is back on the air

Getting fired wasn’t the first time Don Imus had hit rock bottom. Like his stumble into addiction in the 1980s, Imus fell into a personal purgatory after calling the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos.” “I analogize it to being an alcoholic and a drug addict, which I also am,” the talk-show host said during an apologetic return to the airwaves Monday. “If you get into recovery, as I am for 20-some years now, you have the opportunity to be a better person, to have a better life than you ordinarily would have had. And that’s true in this… Read more »

'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys Relics Auctioned

Everything must go! One day only! If you’re in the market for some ‘NSYNC gold records, a couple of Sea Doos, 10,000 jewel cases or a LFO signed poster, then you should get down to Orlando, Florida, before the end of the day. Those items are among the thousands up for auction Tuesday (June 12) that used to belong to disgraced boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman. The items are part of a liquidation of the remaining assets of Pearlman’s once-billion-dollar Trans Continental empire – which included a jet service and management of ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys – that has crumbled to… Read more »

Listeners shocked by XM hosts' suspension

Satellite radio bills itself as the Wild West of the airwaves, an uncensored outpost beyond the reach of federal regulators where expletives fly with impunity and the banter can get as raunchy as at a strip club. But the decision this week by XM Satellite Radio to suspend shock jocks Opie and Anthony for 30 days for crude sexual comments about First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Queen Elizabeth II has listeners wondering whether there’s a new sheriff in town. Some XM listeners were outraged – not at the comments but at XM’s reaction. “I signed… Read more »

Is Shock Radio Dead? Imus Joined in Doghouse

It was a good, flatulent, slur-filled and sexist-gag-soaked run, but the bad boys of radio appear to be living on borrowed time. On Tuesday (May 15), XM shock duo Opie and Anthony were slapped with a 30-day suspension for last week’s gag involving a homeless character discussing his desire to sexually assault Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, first lady Laura Bush and the Queen of England. “Nobody in radio thinks they’re a shock jock; they’re entertainers. But if [the genre] isn’t dead, it’s certainly had a storm warning,” said Tom Taylor, editor of Inside Radio, citing last month’s firing of… Read more »

Fall Out Boy, Paul Wall All Smiles; Civic Tour Under Way

Fall Out Boy’s headlining stint on this year’s Honda Civic Tour had a rough beginning last month. In fact, the trek didn’t start at all. In April, two weeks before they were slated to hit the road, FOB announced that the 43-city North American run would be delayed a month due to “health concerns.” Now the tour is finally under way – it began Friday in Denver . But at the kickoff, it was another artist on the bill who was drawing a lot of the attention: Paul Wall. The People’s Champ is the only hip-hop artist on a bill… Read more »

Hip-Hop Outlaw (Industry Version)

Late in the afternoon of Jan. 16, a SWAT team from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, backed up by officers from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office and the local police department, along with a few drug-sniffing dogs, burst into a unmarked recording studio on a short, quiet street in an industrial neighborhood near the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The officers entered with their guns drawn; the local police chief said later that they were “prepared for the worst.” They had come to serve a warrant for the arrest of the studio’s owners on the grounds that they had violated the… Read more »

Ashanti Wants To Share Her Madness

Promoting her latest album, Concrete Rose, and her upcoming movie “Coach Carter” has given Ashanti an idea – to capture all the madness in a book. Maybe. “I was thinking, do I want to do something towards the children, or do I want to do something like ‘Ashanti: Behind the Scenes’?” she said. This of course would be Ashanti’s second book, her first being the 2002 collection of poetry “Foolish/ Unfoolish: Reflections on Love”. And being that she’s the type who lives to multitask, it could include moments from her life as a singer, as an actress and as an… Read more »

Asian-American Rapper a Pioneer of Sorts

New York – As rap stars go, Jin has the typical look down cold: Hoodie, baggy sweats, chunky diamond stud earring, a Chinese character tattooed on his neck and a large blingy necklace. Not everything’s typical, though. “Yeah, I’m Chinese. And what?” he asks with mock exasperation. At just 22, the Miami-bred, New York-based rapper is something of a pioneer – the first Asian-American hip-hop artist to get a major solo record deal. At the same time, he worries that it’s his race, not his rhymes, generating all the attention. “Being Asian helps me so much,” he says. “It definitely… Read more »

Sum 41 Video Skit Deemed Unsuitable For Children

While Sum 41 were on tour with Good Charlotte last week, the show made the local news. The report, however, could have been a little more positive. Under the banner “Concert Concerns,” a segment ran on the local news in New Orleans that slammed Sum 41 for the violence in the short film the band plays before their set. The clip shows drummer Stevo, decked out in the dorkiest basketball uniform he could find – complete with knee-high socks, wristbands, short-shorts and sports goggles – challenging a demurely dressed bassist Cone to a game of hoops. Cone, of course, righteously… Read more »
