Sony Corp and Bertelsmann AG have refiled a request for EU regulators to clear a 2004 deal merging their music units, the European Commission said Thursday. Regulators have to re-examine the deal they cleared in July 2004 because an EU court struck down their original approval last July, citing “manifest errors” in how authorities decided that combining the two music majors would not restrict customer choice. Los Angeles – In a dismal year for the touring industry, with ticket prices soaring and seats going unsold, music fans in North America partied like it was 1989 as Prince and Madonna topped the concert box office. According to freshly tabulated estimates provided by concert trade publication Pollstar, Prince sold $87.4 million in tickets in 2004, while Madonna earned $79.5 million. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder played a surprise five-song solo set in Seattle Saturday as part of a benefit concert anchored by the rock group’s guitarist, Mike McCready. The concert, at the Showbox club, raised about $16,000 for the local chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
