Boy Band Singer Runs for Cincinnati Mayor

Cincinnati – Justin Jeffre, a former member of 98 Degrees, wants to be Cincinnati’s next mayor, saying his love for his hometown and desire to make it better motivated his decision to run. “I am serious about this, and I intend to win,” Jeffre, 32, said last week. Jeffre said he wants to bring people from all over the city together through Cincinnati’s arts and entertainment venues and build a strong downtown. “We need to sell this city back to the people of this city,” he said. “We’ve forgotten how great this city can be.” He also wants VH1 to… Read more »

Starbucks Says Expands Music Focus to New Artists

Los Angeles – Starbucks Corp. said on Monday it will start selling music by unknown artists in a move that strays from the chain’s reliance on big-name stars to sell CDs at its popular coffee shops. Starbucks – whose success selling music by well-known artists including Ray Charles and Alanis Morissette has made it a thorn in the side of traditional music retailers – next month will begin marketing and selling a CD by up-and-coming rock group Antigone Rising at its more than 4,400 U.S. stores. The CD, called “From the Ground Up,” will cost $12.95. It was produced by… Read more »

U2 to Be Inducted by Springsteen

New York – Bruce Springsteen is returning the favor to Bono. U2’s talkative frontman, who gave memorable stream-of-consciousness speeches inducting Bob Marley and Springsteen into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will be saluted by Springsteen when the Boss inducts U2 next month. Springsteen’s no slouch in the induction speech department: He slyly noted last year how inductee Jackson Browne ‘s audience always seemed to be filled with women. Justin Timberlake will board the “Love Train” to pay tribute to the O’Jays in next month’s ceremony. B.B. King and Eric Clapton will team to induct bluesman Buddy Guy, Rod… Read more »

Velvet Revolver Relaunching Careers

New York – OK, let’s see: The former Guns N’ Roses bandmates have exchanged one loose cannon, Axl Rose, for another who seems even more volatile, Scott Weiland. And rock critics are placing bets on whether Weiland can get through a worldwide tour without winding up in either rehab, jail or a body bag. But after three Grammy nominations and one hit album, the supergroup known as Velvet Revolver is just getting started. The band consists of heavyweights from two of the biggest – and most troubled – rock bands of the past 15 years: Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman… Read more »

MTV Relaunches Little Brother MTV2

New York – Inside the giant factory of cool known as MTV headquarters, a crew of hip twentysomethings has been hard at work creating a two-headed monster. This beast wants to be man’s new best friend. On Sunday, during the Super Bowl halftime, MTV2 is relaunching with a new focus on 12-24 year-old guys – and a new logo. This silhouette of a dog with two heads (you may have seen the intentionally vague posters) is at the center of the new MTV2. The revamped network will maintain most of its current music programming, bonded with swirling graphics and constant… Read more »

Motley Crue Bow To Fan Pressure, Extend Canadian Tour

Well, they do say that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and apparently no rock fans squeak louder than the Motely Crue faithful. When the Crue announced their reunion/farewell Red, White & Crue Tour last month, Canadian hair metal fans were outraged that the famously debauched ’80s rock band were only planning to make stops in Ottawa and Toronto. Regional radio stations began rallying the troops, petitions were started and much to their own delight, Motley Crue earned a whole lot of free publicity. And these fans weren’t looking for a nostalgic trip through irony-land either – they were dead… Read more »

MTV Reaches Global Milestone

New York – Dreams of world domination must be hard for MTV executives to avoid when they host a party at the Kremlin, with a Russian diva and Queen dueting on “We Will Rock You” and Russian soldiers performing a hip-hop dance routine. MTV Networks will reach a milestone in February when the turn of a switch starts an MTV outlet in Africa, the company’s 100th channel worldwide and first based on that continent. Most of its American audience is probably unaware of the extent to which MTV and its sister networks have blanketed the world in an aggressive expansion… Read more »
