Having completed its biggest tour in its home country of Canada, Nickelback now heads to Europe this week to spread the word about its second album, Silver Side Up. The Vancouver rockers begin a 10-show trek beginning Wednesday (February 12) in London, with shows scheduled in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Bono, lead singer of the Irish rock band U2, has been named “European of the Year” for his campaign for debt relief in developing nations, in a poll conducted by the weekly European Voice. Danish film director Lars von Trier was named “Visionary of the Year.” Ten winners were selected by European Voice readers from a list of 50 nominees compiled by journalists and opinion leaders from across the 15 European Union nations. Vivendi Universal today announced that its new subsidiary, MP3.com EUROPE, has launched fully localised European music websites as the first step in its plans to become the leading music portal in Europe. Local sites have been launched in the UK, France, Germany and Spain, with further European website launches planned in 2002. Guns N’ Roses have again canceled their tour of Europe, but unlike other artists rethinking their overseas trips, Axl Rose doesn’t seem to be afraid of traveling – he’s afraid of not being able to work on the band’s never-ending new album. Earlier this year GN’R canceled a 14-city European jaunt scheduled for June, citing an unspecified stomach ailment suffered by guitarist Buckethead, and then rebooked the dates for December. British band Depeche Mode said on Thursday the September 11 suicide hijack attacks in the United States had hardly affected European musicians and concert-goers. He contrasted this to the U.S. situation, where the music industry had slowed down. Blink-182 has postponed its fall European tour in support of its latest album, Take Off Your Pants And Jacket, becoming the latest American group to make such a move in recent weeks in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Blink has rescheduled the trek for just after the first of the year, beginning in Zurich, Germany on January 4. Fourteen shows are scheduled, including a two-night stand at London’s Wembley Arena. Others to cancel overseas tours since the tragedies on the East Coast include Weezer, Janet Jackson, Pantera, and Aimee Mann.

Last month’s terrorist attacks have played a hand in thwarting yet another tour, this time claiming Weezer’s planned 16-date European trek that was to begin in Copenhagen on October 9.
