Moments before the opening curtain of “American Idiot,” the musical theater debut of the punk band Green Day, a t-shirted house manager took the stage at Berkeley Repertory Theater for the tradition of reminding audience members to turn off their cellphones and unwrap their candies. In early 1984, when Epic Records executives presented their slate of upcoming releases at the convention in Hawaii of parent company CBS Records they couldn’t resist playing up the success they were experiencing. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is hitting the road in June, lining up solo shows in six southern and eastern cities as well as three concerts in Hawaii. The 14-date trek starts June 8th in Albany, New York, and hits theaters in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Nashville, Memphis and Atlanta before wrapping up with shows in Maui and Honolulu from June 29th through July 2nd. The average cellphone customer pays more than $3 per minute, according to a report being issued this week by the Utility Consumers’ Action Network, a San Diego consumer advocacy group. Researchers arrived at the average $3.02-per-minute charge by comparing the average number of minutes charged in more than 700 San Diego consumers’ telecom bills and dividing by the average number of actual minutes used. “We knew it was a myth that wireless costs were going down,” said Michael Shames, UCAN’s executive director. “But we were blown away by the actual costs.” That $3-per-minute figure is skewed by the relatively small… Read more »
