Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight: Nu-Metallers Grow Up

For all the talk about Linkin Park killing off nü metal on the upcoming Minutes to Midnight, it’s rather puzzling that the first sound you hear on the album is the crackle of a needle hitting a record. After all, one of the, uh, tenets of the genre was the head-bopping DJ – think guys like LP’s Joe Hahn or Limp Bizkit’s Lethal – the dude responsible for, literally, putting the needle on the record (and for appearing out of place in all the press photos). So was co-frontman Chester Bennington kidding when he told MTV News back in September… Read more »

Marriage Proposal Stuns Christina Aguilera

New York – Christina Aguilera says she was shocked when a Valentine surprise turned into a marriage proposal. The 24-year-old pop diva says music executive Jordan Bratman, her boyfriend of two years, popped the question at Big Sur, Calif., last Friday after recreating a romantic dinner the two had while touring India in the fall. “It was unbelievable,” Aguilera told Us Weekly magazine. “Every cute thing he did, I totally thought was just a Valentine’s Day surprise – he got me!” “He sent me on a scavenger hunt,” she said. “My mom used to do scavenger hunts for me when… Read more »

3 Doors Down Steers Straight to No. 1

Los Angeles – Rock band 3 Doors Down earned its first No. 1 on the U.S. pop albums chart Wednesday with its latest CD, “Seventeen Days.” The Republic/Universal release sold 231,000 copies in the week ended Feb. 13, according to Nielsen SoundScan, the best sales week of the band’s career. The Mississippi-bred combo’s previous high came with 2002’s “Away From the Sun,” which opened and peaked at No. 8 with 115,000 and has sold 3.3 million to date. 2000’s debut “The Better Life” has sold 5.2 million copies so far. Previous champ, rapper the Game’s “The Documentary” (Aftermath/G-Unit/Interscope), slipped to… Read more »

2004 Music Sales Echo '70s Sitcom

Merchants are describing this year’s holiday-season sales as a roller-coaster ride. That could hardly be said about the full-year sales experience. At least a roller coaster offers the contrast of intermittent highs and lows. Album sales started with one long rise toward a hopeful tally for the first eight months of 2004, followed by a steep decline that stole back most of the year’s advances in just a few weeks, as if a thrill ride had been designed by a party pooper who did not fully grasp the concept. But maybe a better analogy – as Ludacris replaces Jay-Z and… Read more »

Ozzy Up for Ozzfest

Ozzy Osbourne may be famous for biting a head off a bat, but he’ll never bite the hand that feeds him-that is, his fans. Chomping at the bit to get back onstage again since his near-fatal ATV crash late last year, the Prince of F-king Darkness has confirmed plans to headline this summer’s Ozzfest, the monstrously successful heavy metal touring festival he founded in 1996, Billboard.com reports. Details are still sketchy but the bill is also said to include such other headbangers as Slayer, shock-rockers Slipknot and enduring British metal mavens Judas Priest, who recently reunited with vocalist Rob Halford… Read more »

Living Grateful Dead Members Rename Group the Dead

The surviving members of the cult band The Grateful Dead have decided to scrap their short-lived moniker “The Other Ones” and rename themselves what everyone was calling them anyway: “The Dead.” An icon of 1960s California that has long attracted those embracing alternative lifestyles, the band lost its leader Jerry Garcia in 1995 when he died in a drug rehabilitation clinic. The band then retired the name “Grateful Dead” in tribute to Garcia. The bands remaining members gave their first major concert together last August as “The Other Ones” featuring Phil Lesh on bass, Bob Weir on guitar and Bill… Read more »

Jennifer Lopez to Confirm Engagement

It’s a go for J. Lo and Ben Affleck. The singer-actress confirms rumors that she’s engaged to the actor in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer set to air Wednesday. The couple, who have been photographed kissing everywhere over the past few months, were recently engaged in a “traditional, but also in a very spectacular way,” Lopez says. The couple met last winter while shooting the movie “Gigli,” in which Lopez plays a gangster sent to supervise a thug, played by Affleck, in a kidnapping. She describes Affleck as “brilliantly smart,” charming and affectionate. “My mother loves Ben,” she adds.… Read more »

Lopez, Affleck Coy on Wedding Plans

Are they or aren’t they? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck won’t say, but it sure looks like they’re engaged. The couple, who’ve been photographed kissing everywhere over the past few months, have been coy about whether they’re getting married. People magazine, quoting friends and sources, reports in its Nov. 18 issue that they plan to tie the knot on Valentine’s Day. The marriage would be the third for Lopez, 32, and the first for Affleck, 30. Lopez’s publicist, Alan Nierob, declined to comment on the report Thursday. Affleck’s publicist didn’t immediately return a phone call. The singer-actress has been wearing… Read more »

The Britney And Justin Mystery: Why They Won't Come Clean

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake love each other very much and have not broken up. At least that’s still the “official” stance a spokesperson for the couple takes when asked of the status of their relationship. And if you believe that, some might think you were born yesterday. The official media statement is in direct opposition to a month’s worth of unconfirmed reports and anonymous eyewitness accounts that say the king and queen of the teen-pop prom have ended their reign. While public opinion favors the notion that the romance is kaput – gossip columnists citing Britney shakin’ it with… Read more »
