U2 Recording New Material For Second Greatest-Hits LP

They’re in the studio recording new material, but U2 aren’t working on a new album just yet. Instead, they’re writing songs for inclusion on an upcoming greatest-hits package that will feature songs released between 1991’s Achtung Baby and 2000’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind. The album is due out by the end of the year and will be a companion piece to Best of U2: 1980-90, which the band released in 1998. While some pressings of that record included an additional disc of B-sides, this next installment of greatest hits will likely be contained on a single disc, since… Read more »

Having walked away with four Grammy Awards this year, including Best Rock Album for their 2000 LP, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, U2 are intent on moving ahead once again. Less than a month after its decisive Grammy victory, the group re-entered the studio to work on its next album, the band’s manager Paul McGuinness said in a statement Wednesday. “U2 would like to clarify that, contrary to certain speculation in the press, they will be neither touring Europe this summer, nor splitting up,” McGuinness said. “Instead, they are spending time in the studio working on new material for… Read more »

A fan who slipped in a puddle of urine and water at Soldier Field in Chicago while going for a bathroom break during a U2 concert was awarded $2.6 million on Tuesday (March 12). U2 Fired Up for Unforgettable Night at Grammys

Will U2 find what it’s looking for on Wednesday, when it competes for eight Grammy Awards at the music industry’s biggest bash of the year? Or will the Irish rock quartet be rattled by folk musicians, soulful R&B divas and tireless troubadour Bob Dylan? Nothing is ever certain about the Grammys, whose industry voters frequently stun music fans with oddball choices, including last year’s album of the year prize to semi-retired jazz-rock recluses Steely Dan. In the past few years the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, which organizes the event, has tried to improve the awards’ image by… Read more »

Entertainment Weekly reports that U2 played the Super Bowl halftime show for free. The magazine reports that the NFL was willing to pay them but they didn’t want any money. Janet Jackson was the first choice for the halftime show but when NFL bigwigs caught a U2 show in New York City they felt the band would set the right tone for the festivities after Sept. 11. The report says Mariah Carey and Paul McCartney also were not paid for their services, but the NFL picked up their travel expenses.

The fate of a Dublin studio used by U2 that was set for demolition was to be reconsidered Tuesday (January 29), thanks in part to an online petition signed by more than 2,000 fans of the Irish rock group, Reuters reports. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority was to discuss the fate of the Hanover Quay studio, at which U2 recorded its latest album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind. Last year, the property had been earmarked for razing as part of a redevelopment project. But a document carrying 2,146 signatures helped shed light on the local landmark.
