The early days of Lady Gaga

One of the most fascinating aspects of Lady Gaga’s ascension to the pop stratosphere is how formerly unknown New York rock-club singer Stefani Germanotta seems to have known all along that this was her destiny.

Block the Vote: GOP's Campaign to Deter New Voters

These days, the old west rail hub of Las Vegas, New Mexico, is little more than a dusty economic dead zone amid a boneyard of bare mesas. In national elections, the town overwhelmingly votes Democratic: More than 80 percent of all residents are Hispanic, and one in four lives below the poverty line. On February 5th, the day of the Super Tuesday caucus, a school-bus driver named Paul Maez arrived at his local polling station to cast his ballot. To his surprise, Maez found that his name had vanished from the list of registered voters, thanks to a statewide effort… Read more »

Q&A With Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig

Michael Roberts: For all of the articles that have been written about you guys, very few of them have very much biographical information. It’s as if you were born at Columbia when you were twenty. So I thought I’d try getting some actual facts. Where are you from originally? Ezra Koenig: Well, originally, I was born in New York. My parents lived on the Upper West Side. But I have no memory of living here, because I almost totally grew up in Northern New Jersey, in the suburbs of New York. MR: Tell me about your parents. What jobs did… Read more »

Brad Paisley will return to his West Virginia hometown to shoot his latest video. “He’s proud of his West Virginia roots,” his father, Doug Paisley, told West Virginia Public Broadcasting. The video is for the song “Letter to Me,” from the 34-year-old country singer’s new album, “5th Gear.” It’s about what Paisley would write to himself if he could send a letter back in time to when he was 17. It includes advice on romantic relationships, dating, studying and driving. Paisley is inviting some of his classmates from John Marshall High School to be in the video. He graduated in… Read more »

What if you built a machine to predict hit movies?

One sunny afternoon not long ago, Dick Copaken sat in a booth at Daniel, one of those hushed, exclusive restaurants on Manhattan’s Upper East Side where the waiters glide spectrally fro table to table. He was wearing a starched button-down shirt and a blue blazer. Every strand of his thinning hair was in place, and he spoke calmly and slowly, his large pink Charlie Brow head bobbing along evenly as he did. Copaken spent many years as a partner at the white-shoe Washington, D.C., firm Covington & Burling, and he has a lawyer’s gravitas. One of his bes friends calls… Read more »

Survey Reports File-Sharing Doesn't Hurt Most Artists

Washington – Most musicians and artists say the Internet has helped them make more money from their work despite online file-trading services that allow users to copy songs and other material for free, according to a study released on Sunday. Recording labels and movie studios have hired phalanxes of lawyers to pursue “peer to peer” networks like Kazaa, and have sued thousands of individuals who distribute copyrighted material through such networks. But most of the artists surveyed by the nonprofit Pew Internet and American Life Project said online file sharing did not concern them much. Artists were split on the… Read more »

New MTV Channel Spotlights College Rock Bands

The 24-hour channel, an overhaul of the College Television Network bought by MTV in 2002, can be seen at 720 colleges in dormitories, dining halls and gyms. “Because this audience is constantly experimenting, we needed to be a laboratory,” for new music and trends, said Stephen Friedman, general manager of mtvU.… Read more »

FCC Radio Rules Under New Scrutiny

Any effort to rewrite the latest federal rules for radio must include a broad investigation into such issues as “pay-for-play” and artist intimidation, according to music and artists’ groups. Michael Bracey, director of government relations for the Future of Music Coalition, says his group wants the Federal Communications Commission to examine “pay-for-play and vertical integration” in the radio industry. The group opposes FCC rule changes that were enacted June 7. And Jay Rosenthal, co-counsel of the Recording Artists’ Coalition (RAC), wants the commission to follow up on reports of artist intimidation. “The FCC can no longer ignore evidence of radio… Read more »
