‘NSYNC, Shaggy and Tim McGraw are slated to perform at the 2001 Billboard Music Awards, taking place December 4 in Las Vegas. The event will be held at the MGM Grand Garden and broadcast live on Fox, according to the trade magazine. The Billboard Music Awards are given out based on year-end sales. John Mellencamp will be given the 2001 Billboard Century Award, the magazine’s highest recognition for distinguished creative achievement, at the ceremony. The hombres in ‘NSYNC have forked over their Spanish-language version of “This I Promise You” to help Madonna kick-start her Latin-music label. “Yo Te Voy a Amar” will appear on the dance pop collection pLATINum rhythm, due October 30 on Maverick Musica. ‘NSYNC performed the number at the inaugural Latin Grammys last year but have not released the song commercially. The music industry is now testing different copy protection systems on mass market chart CDs, with copies of NSync’s Celebrity on the Zomba label being sold in at least three different versions. Those available in Germany have draconian protection, a slightly weaker system is used on the US disk and there is no protection on the UK version. The only visible clue is small print on the German release which warns “this CD is not playable on computers”.
