The Raveonettes: Kids In America

There may not be something rotten in Denmark, but there must be something strange in the air when it comes to their cultural relationship with America. At least it seems that way when you look at some of the country’s most interesting exports. Just last month, Toronto was treated to a screening of Lars Von Trier’s new film, Dogville, and a concert in support of The Raveonettes’ new album, Chain Gang Of Love. Both were about America. Although The Raveonettes have admitted to being influenced by Von Trier’s Dogma 95 films, their opinions on The States couldn’t be more different.… Read more »

John Lennon Tapes Go on Auction Block

Probably not. It’s a song Lennon made up to amuse five-year-old Kyoko Cox in 1969 in Denmark. Cox was Ono’s daughter from a previous marriage, and that was the only time Lennon met her. Two of the cassettes Lennon and Cox made of silly songs and conversation will be auctioned off beginning today. On the tapes, Lennon starts making up a song he was going to call “The Teapot Song,” but Cox says no and instead calls it “The Radiant World of Natural.” Lennon then sings about birds and bees and cheese and wax, before pretending to cry and say,… Read more »

Tapes of Lennon and Stepdaughter to Be Auctioned

He was one of the biggest rock stars in the world and she was just a little 5-year-old girl as they sat on the floor in 1969, singing and telling stories with a tape recorder running. Sounds like just a normal family activity, except the man was Beatle John Lennon and the little girl was the stepdaughter he barely knew, Kyoko Cox. In 1969 fans worried the Beatles would break up. But instead of attending the last Beatles recording session, Lennon was in Denmark with his second wife Yoko Ono. They were there to visit Ono’s ex-husband Tony Cox, an… Read more »

Great White Fire Ranks as Rock's Worst Tragedy

From rampaging bikers at the Rolling Stones’ infamous Altamont show in 1969 to deadly stampedes by fans of the Who and Pearl Jam, the most notorious rock concert tragedies have generally been linked to the biggest names in the business. That is, until Great White took the stage of a tiny Rhode Island nightclub Thursday night. The heavy metal “hair” band, which reached the brief apex of its career in the 1980s, will now be forever remembered for a devastating fire that stands in a class by itself as the deadliest episode in the annals of rock ‘n’ roll mayhem.… Read more »

Avril Lavigne Announces First Headlining Tour

Among the many things complicated for Avril Lavigne – stuff like new romances and pronouncing the names of rock legends – performing onstage isn’t one of them. The 18-year-old rocker said that “being up onstage is the best part of being a musician” and “everything else is annoying” in a recent online chat. When her first North American headlining tour begins April 11 in Montreal, fans will see for themselves how performing in front of thousands can put a smile on her face. Twenty-two shows are lined up for the trek thus far, according to Lavigne’s publicist, with a few… Read more »

Pearl Jam CD Deals With Mortality

Eddie Vedder has found plenty of material in mortality over the years. His band, Pearl Jam, was born of a heroin overdose more than a decade ago. Rival songwriter Kurt Cobain of Nirvana committed suicide while at the height of popularity. Two of Pearl Jam’s biggest hits, “Jeremy” and “Last Kiss,” deal with teen death. Now comes renewal, an appropriate topic as the lead singer and his bandmates re-emerge from their most proximate shock: the deaths of nine fans trampled during the 2000 Roskilde festival in Denmark. “Riot Act,” released Nov. 12, is Pearl Jam’s first studio album since the… Read more »

Stop Music for Free, Pleads Record Industry

The record industry pleaded on Wednesday with consumers to stop downloading and recording music for free because piracy was strangling the multi-billion-dollar industry. Profits have plummeted, especially in Europe. CD sales in Germany last year were 185 million whereas the number of blank CDs used to copy music was estimated at 182 million. Record executives also believe there are now more unauthorized music files available on the Internet than at the height of Napster ( news – web sites)’s success in the field. “Music for free means less new music, fewer new artists, less choice, thousands less jobs,” said Jay… Read more »
