Death Cab For Cutie To Drop By 'The O.C.' Next Month

Death Cab for Cutie and “The O.C.” have had a symbiotic relationship almost since the teen beach drama began in August, 2003. Protagonist Seth Cohen (actor Adam Brody) named-dropped the Washington state indie-rockers liberally and sported posters of the group on his wall, giving them mainstream exposure they probably never expected. In turn, Seth, his refined taste, and the show itself have earned a stellar reputation in music-geek circles. Death Cab have had their music featured in key scenes before, but the group will finally perform on “The O.C.” on April 20. The group will play two songs from its… Read more »

Ex-Smashing Pumpkins Drummer Says Creator May Want To Hear His Music

After he joined the Smashing Pumpkins 17 years ago, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s career began to revolve around incidents of death and rebirth. In March of 1996, his father died when the Pumpkins were on tour. Then in July of that same year, road keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died from a heroin overdose while shooting up with Chamberlin. The drummer was arrested for possession and booted from the band for his inability to kick smack, with which he had battled since 1991. Ironically, the seeming death of his career triggered his spiritual rebirth. With help from friends, he got clean and rejoined… Read more »

Teen TV Dramas Help Emerging Music Stars

New York – When Casey Stratton was a struggling singer-songwriter a few years ago, he had idealistic notions about artistic integrity. High on his list of what would jeopardize it: licensing his music to television. “When I was younger, I used to be really weird about stuff like that, like, ‘I will not cheapen my work by putting it on TELEVISION!’” he recalls with a chuckle. That was before the producers of the teen-oriented drama “Tarzan” called and asked to use the bittersweet ballad “Hollow,” from his debut album, on the WB show. Stratton gave the go-ahead, and while the… Read more »

Kelly Osbourne Enters Drug Rehab

Kelly Osbourne, the 19-year-old daughter of heavy metal star Ozzy Osbourne, has checked into a drug rehabilitation center for an addiction to painkillers, her parents said. Ozzy, 55, and Sharon Osbourne, 51, talked about their daughter’s drug problem Friday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” Sharon Osbourne said that an English tabloid notified them Friday that they had a photograph of Kelly in an apparent drug deal. Kelly Osbourne was confronted and eventually acknowledged a drug problem “after a lot of twisting,” Sharon Osbourne said. Osbourne’s younger brother, Jack, 18, checked himself into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic last… Read more »

Britney Spears' Puzzling New Video Has Singer Drowning In Fame

Britney Spears is getting into that “Leaving Las Vegas” frame of mind. The singer is going to stage her suicide in her new video for “Everytime,” as a way to respond to rumors and reports that she’s teetering on the brink, seeking help, in therapy or otherwise disturbed. Call the clip Britney’s funhouse mirror – it’ll reflect her life, but distort it, too. Spears’ follow-up to “Toxic” – her first #1 single since 2000’s “Oops!… I Did it Again” – will be shot in Los Angeles but set in Sin City, home of her quickie marriage. Though “Everytime” is a… Read more »

Puddle Of Mudd's Wes Scantlin Arrested After Drunken Performance

Fans at a Puddle of Mudd show in Toledo, Ohio, got a lot less than they bargained for Sunday night when frontman Wes Scantlin cut the band’s set short, announced he was too wasted to play and eventually found himself in police custody facing a disorderly conduct charge. Those in attendance said that a scant four songs into the band’s performance at Headliners club Scantlin’s bandmates walked off the stage, leaving a stumbling, hostile Scantlin alone. According to concertgoers, Scantlin was, by his own admission to the crowd, “too f–ed up” to perform. Still, he remained onstage for half an… Read more »

Buddy Miles Sues Hendrix Estate, L.A. Labels

Drummer Buddy Miles is suing the estate of Jimi Hendrix and several record labels for millions of dollars, alleging he was not paid royalties for his collaborations with the guitarist more than 30 years ago. The drummer in Hendrix’s short-lived Band of Gypsys, Miles, 56, said in the suit filed on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, that he received virtually no money for his work. The band was formed in 1969 and Miles left a year later. He said his collaborations with Hendrix produced 38 songs that he either performed on or co-wrote, including “Vodoo Child,” “Rainy Day Dream… Read more »

Ozzy Says Too Much Freedom Contributed To Jack's Drug Use

Speaking for the first time about his son’s battle with an addiction to OxyContin, Ozzy Osbourne acknowledged parental mistakes and expressed regret for having given his children so much freedom. “The mistake that Sharon and I both made, and we both agree on this, is we never set any boundaries,” the Osbourne patriarch told MTV News, addressing his son Jack’s recent stint in rehab. “We never said, ‘You must be in the house by a certain time.’ We just let them have the freedom. Sharon and I are still learning. We’re not the parents that say, ‘We’re always right,’ because… Read more »

They Might Be Giants: Drumming Up Support

The touring career of They Might Be Giants might be summed up as drum machine and post-drum machine. When band members John Flansburgh and John Linnell first started, they sang and played guitar, keyboards and accordion but used a drum machine to back them up. As they progressed, they used live drums and a backing band. “Now we’re more like a regular band where we can do one loud song and then rock on into another song,” Flansburgh said. But he added that some fans are purists who prefer the original drum machine set-up. “Some people miss the old way… Read more »

Pop punks drop a rock on Orange County girls – Review

At the very least, give credit to New Found Glory and Good Charlotte for getting teenage girls enthusiastic about rock that has real guitars and real drums. More than that, those two pop-punk bands deserve to be saluted for the energy and enthusiasm they displayed at their show Wednesday night at the University of California, Irvine’s Bren Events Center. But no one can applaud them for nuance or finesse. Their performances are like this: Go from zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds, and keep it there. The kids who filled the Bren Center loved it. They screamed, sang along (especially… Read more »
