After he joined the Smashing Pumpkins 17 years ago, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s career began to revolve around incidents of death and rebirth. In March of 1996, his father died when the Pumpkins were on tour. Then in July of that same year, road keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin died from a heroin overdose while shooting up with Chamberlin. Ozzy, 55, and Sharon Osbourne, 51, talked about their daughter’s drug problem Friday night on CNN’s “Larry King Live.” Sharon Osbourne said that an English tabloid notified them Friday that they had a photograph of Kelly in an apparent drug deal. Fans at a Puddle of Mudd show in Toledo, Ohio, got a lot less than they bargained for Sunday night when frontman Wes Scantlin cut the band’s set short, announced he was too wasted to play and eventually found himself in police custody facing a disorderly conduct charge. Those in attendance said that a scant four songs into the band’s performance at Headliners club Scantlin’s bandmates walked off the stage, leaving a stumbling, hostile Scantlin alone. Drummer Buddy Miles is suing the estate of Jimi Hendrix and several record labels for millions of dollars, alleging he was not paid royalties for his collaborations with the guitarist more than 30 years ago. The drummer in Hendrix’s short-lived Band of Gypsys, Miles, 56, said in the suit filed on Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, that he received virtually no money for his work. The band was formed in 1969 and Miles left a year later. The touring career of They Might Be Giants might be summed up as drum machine and post-drum machine. When band members John Flansburgh and John Linnell first started, they sang and played guitar, keyboards and accordion but used a drum machine to back them up.
