New research points to the possibility that Napster’s demise is actually exacerbating the spread of Internet piracy of copyrighted materials. According to research firm Webnoize, consumers transferred more than 1.5 billion digital media files during September using FastTrack, the back-end technology of Kazaa, MusicCity, and Grokster. In July, Webnoize forecast that FastTrack would reach 1 million users by the end of September, and it appears that they were correct. Free music downloading is hotter than ever, said researchers on Thursday who found more than 3 billion files were downloaded on four leading file-swapping services in August, topping Napster at its peak. Woodland Hills, Calif.-based WebRadio.com, a partly-owned subsidiary of Emblaze Systems today announced it will stop its Internet streaming services on August 31, 2001. The move, expected by many observers for a considerable period of time, is intended to allow the company to concentrate its focus on the emerging wireless multimedia market. Emblaze Systems has decided to reallocate most of WebRadio’s resources to better serve its wireless business model. WebRadio.com will maintain a staff and will continue to provide streaming services in order to allow each station to make arrangements to obtain streaming capabilities with other industry affiliates.  

Just a day after canceling a promotional tour and pushing back the release date of their second album, Slipknot have committed to a fall tour with System of a Down. The first annual Pledge of Allegiance Tour will launch on October 1st at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, and will run six weeks. In addition to the two main acts, the tour will include a second stage featuring new artists and non-music entertainment. The number of songs swapped on Napster fell by more than a third, down 36 percent, in April from March as the company’s court-ordered filters blocked more pirated files, but nearly 1.6 billion MP3 files still changed hands. Technology research firm Webnoize said in a report this week that the number of files traded on the Napster service has steadily declined, from a peak of 2.79 billion in February to 2.49 billion in March and 1.59 billion in April. Like concertgoers reluctantly heading home as the lights come up, many Napster users are heading for greener pastures as the company’s court mandated filters block more than a million copyrighted music files from the service. File-sharing service attempts to comply with court order, but downloaders concoct ways to avoid blocks. Despite Napster’s promise to do everything in its power to comply with a court order to remove copyrighted songs from its system this week, users can still find – and download – plenty of tunes by Metallica and other artists. And those users are working just as hard, if not harder, to foil Napster’s efforts.
