Webnoize Estimates Two Billion Files Downloaded Using Napster Alternatives

Consumers transferred 1.81 billion digital media files using the Kazaa, MusicCity and Grokster file-sharing applications during October, a rise of 20% from the 1.51 billion files downloaded during September, according to Webnoize (http://www.webnoize.com). All three applications use software licensed from FastTrack, an Amsterdam-based peer-to-peer technology company, and share the same network. During the month, 1.3 million users were typically logged on to the combined network at any one time, compared to 1 million simultaneous users in September. “The growth of the FastTrack network continues to be astounding,” said Webnoize Senior Analyst Matt Bailey, who led the study. “During the last… Read more »

Webnoize: Pirated Downloads Up 50 Percent in September

New research points to the possibility that Napster’s demise is actually exacerbating the spread of Internet piracy of copyrighted materials. According to research firm Webnoize, consumers transferred more than 1.5 billion digital media files during September using FastTrack, the back-end technology of Kazaa, MusicCity, and Grokster. In July, Webnoize forecast that FastTrack would reach 1 million users by the end of September, and it appears that they were correct. During September, roughly 1 million users were typically logged on to the network at any one time, compared to 580,000 simultaneous users in August. Webnoize estimates 1.51 billion files were downloaded… Read more »

Music Downloading Rises In August, Topping Napster

Free music downloading is hotter than ever, said researchers on Thursday who found more than 3 billion files were downloaded on four leading file-swapping services in August, topping Napster at its peak. Several peer-to-peer services, which enable users to trade music, video and other files over the Web, have sprung up recently to fill the void left by song-swap service Napster, which has seen activity die due to music industry lawsuits. “Despite the millions of dollars spent trying to kill off pirate networks, the popularity of peer-to-peer file-sharing continues to grow,” said Matt Bailey, the Webnoize analyst who led the… Read more »

Napster Filtering Hits Snags As Users Try To Outwit System

File-sharing service attempts to comply with court order, but downloaders concoct ways to avoid blocks. Despite Napster’s promise to do everything in its power to comply with a court order to remove copyrighted songs from its system this week, users can still find – and download – plenty of tunes by Metallica and other artists. And those users are working just as hard, if not harder, to foil Napster’s efforts. Napster won’t say how many songs it has already filtered, but searches for top-selling artists such as Joe, ‘N Sync, Britney Spears and Eminem all turned up dozens of matches… Read more »
