Time Warner Inc., the world’s largest media company, swung back to a profit in the fourth quarter of 2003 after reporting a $44.9 billion loss in the same period a year ago because of write-downs at its AOL unit, the company reported Wednesday. Time Warner posted net earnings of $638 million, or 14 cents a share, in the three months ending in December, just shy of the 15 cents per share that analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call had been expecting. Fourth-quarter losses skyrocketed at AOL Time Warner Inc. after a staggering $45.5 billion charge to account for the struggling media conglomerate’s plunging value. The company also announced Wednesday that former cable TV mogul Ted Turner is stepping down as vice chairman. In the three months ending Dec. 31, AOL lost $44.9 billion, or $10.04 per share, compared with a loss of $1.8 billion, or 41 cents per share, in the fourth quarter of 2001. Following in her father’s footsteps, Kelly Osbourne will sing for the first time on stage during the MTV Movie Awards. The pink-haired, 17-year-old daughter of Ozzy Osbourne will perform her cover of Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” during the awards show Saturday at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium.
