Guns N' Roses' Axl Rose: 'Slash or I will die before we reunite'

There is no chance that Axl Rose and his former Guns N’ Roses bandmate Slash will reunite. One of the pair will “die” before such an event could occur, Axl Rose said. The frontman told Billboard that the dispute between the pair would never be healed. He went on to say that Guns N’ Roses in its current guise, could tour in the near future. “In regards to Slash,” he said, “I read a desperate fan’s message about, ‘What if one of us were to die, and looking back I had the possibility of a reunion now.’ My thoughts are,… Read more »

Music labels still fret, despite iTunes accord

Last month the music industry and Apple, long uneasy partners, seemed a picture of harmony when they agreed on new terms for pricing on iTunes, Apple’s online music store. Behind the scenes, however, the relationship remains as tense and antagonistic as ever. The announcement on Jan. 6 seemed to signal a rapprochement between the music industry and its biggest distributor: record companies gave up their demand for copyright protection (called digital rights management) and Apple allowed flexible pricing, so the labels could charge more for new or popular tracks. But according to one music industry executive involved in the negotiations,… Read more »

Digital firms pay heavy price for labels' support

A stark truth facing any aspiring digital music service these days is that working with record labels is going to carry a hefty price. The last 18 months have seen the major music labels accept new technological and business models — such as dropping digital rights management and allowing ad-supported free music — that have given rise to a new generation of digital music services. But the flip side of this willingness to experiment is a demand for higher upfront advances for licensing music and in some cases a substantial equity stake in the company. Ad-supported download service SpiralFrog, for… Read more »

Sony ordered to pay $5M in logo dispute

Sony Music must pay the founder of a small record company $5 million for failing to put his company’s logo on reissues of Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell” album, a federal appeals court ruled. Steve Popovich, 65, who started Cleveland International Records in 1977 and soon afterward signed the chubby singer named Marvin Lee Aday, persuaded Epic Records to release the wildly successful album. Epic was owned at the time by CBS. Sony, which bought out CBS Records, paid $6.7 million to Popovich and his former partners in 1998 to settle a lawsuit over royalties from the album. The… Read more »

Apple, Labels Focus on Copy Protection

The last time Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs took on major recording companies, he refused to budge on his 99-cent price for a song on iTunes. As a new round of talks ramp up this month, however, Jobs has opened the door to higher prices – as long as music companies let Apple Inc. sell their songs without technology designed to stop unauthorized copying. Jobs contends that would “tear down the walls” by allowing consumers to play music they buy at Apple’s iTunes store on any digital music player, not just the company’s iPods. Although most of the major labels… Read more »

EMI and Beatles settle royalty dispute

The company representing The Beatles has settled a 30 million-pound ($59 million) royalty dispute with EMI Group, in a deal that could finally pave the way for the Liverpool band’s music to go online. Apple Corps, the company owned by Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, said in December 2005 it would sue the record company after negotiations broke down. Apple Corps said an audit had determined EMI had not been fulfilling the terms of its contract. “We have settled on mutually acceptable terms and there will be no further comment,” a spokeswoman… Read more »

LA radio host acquitted of threat

A radio host who has one of the top-rated shows among the city’s Hispanic listeners has been acquitted of a misdemeanor charge of making a criminal threat involving his son. Officers who had been sent to investigate a domestic violence call at Almendarez’s San Fernando Valley home on New Year’s Day reported finding traces of blood. The officers said they learned that Almendarez’s adult son had attempted to intervene in a dispute between his parents and that Almendarez had… Read more »

Unwritten Law Parts Ways With Guitarist Rob Brewer

New York, NY – San Diego rockers Unwritten Law have parted ways with Rob Brewer, the band’s long-time guitarist. The veteran rockers will remain intact as a four piece and are on tour now with Sum 41 in support of their new album Here’s To the Mourning. “It was an incredibly difficult decision, albeit the right thing to do given the recent circumstances,” remarked Unwritten Law vocalist Scott Russo. “Rob is irreplaceable and we plan to continue as a four-piece. We wish him the best and remain confident that Unwritten Law will continue to make great music.” Considered by many… Read more »

Velvet Revolver Relaunching Careers

New York – OK, let’s see: The former Guns N’ Roses bandmates have exchanged one loose cannon, Axl Rose, for another who seems even more volatile, Scott Weiland. And rock critics are placing bets on whether Weiland can get through a worldwide tour without winding up in either rehab, jail or a body bag. But after three Grammy nominations and one hit album, the supergroup known as Velvet Revolver is just getting started. The band consists of heavyweights from two of the biggest – and most troubled – rock bands of the past 15 years: Former Stone Temple Pilots frontman… Read more »

Youth Vote Campaigns Falls Flat, Dispite $40 Million Spending

While the vote count in Ohio plays out, there is one fact that is not in dispute. The same percentage of eligible voters between 18-29 showed up to the polls yesterday as they did in the 2000 Presidential election. Despite the fact that over $40 million was spent by the New Voters Project, Rock the Vote, MTV Choose or Lose, Declare Yourself, Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, and Smack Down Your Vote, as well as the Democratic and Republican National Committee, the percentage of eligible voters between 18-29 in yesterday’s election remained at 17%. However, the campaigns did increase the number… Read more »
