The Fray just demoted the Boss. One week after Bruce Springsteen scored the first No. 1 debut of the year, the Denver rockers displaced him with their eponymous sophomore release. The Fray sold 179,000 for the week ended Sunday, per Nielsen SoundScan to 102,000 for Springsteen’s Working on a Dream at No. 2. When they first came on the scene, Southern California quintet Phantom Planet were best, if incorrectly, known as the side project of Jonathan Schwartzman, the teen actor who played smug genius Max Fischer in 1998’s “Rushmore.” But Schwartzman formed Phantom Planet with his buddies in 1994, four years before the group released their debut, Phantom Planet Is Missing. Southern California funk rockers the Red Hot Chili Peppers, whose members occasionally wear only a strategically placed tube sock, are getting ready to release their first concert video in a decade. “Off the Map,” due December 4 on VHS and DVD, was filmed by Dick Rude at a September 2000 show in Portland, Oregon. Heartfelt letters from Beatle John Lennon, including a rant he fired off to Paul and Linda McCartney, are included in a five-decade collection of pop memorabilia up for sale Thursday at auction house Christie’s. The draft letter, littered with spelling mistakes, deletions and expletives, swings between hurt and anger and affection for McCartney, offering an insight into their strained relationship at the time of the Beatles’ breakup in the early 1970s.
