Authorities were investigating Thursday whether singer Bobby Brown, charged with battery after he allegedly hit his wife, singer-actress Whitney Houston, violated his probation on a prior drunken driving conviction. Brown is on probation until Feb. 17, 2005, for a drunken driving conviction in DeKalb County, said Courtney Johnson, a lawyer with the DeKalb County solicitor general’s office. A track from Marilyn Manson’s recent Nothing/Interscope album, “The Golden Age of Grotesque,” will be featured on the new “Spawn Armageddon” videogame, Billboard has learned exclusively. “Use Your Fist, Not Your Mouth” will be included in the game, which arrives in stores Nov. 26. “If any artist epitomizes my antihero Spawn, it’s Marilyn Manson,” says Todd McFarlane, creator of the noir comic character and head of McFarlane Enterprises. Napster, Penn State Unveil Online Music Deal


In a move aimed at stemming wide-scale online piracy on college campuses, Penn State University on Thursday reached a deal to offer thousands of students free access to the Napster music service. Penn State President Graham Spanier said the school will offer students access to digital music and limited downloading from Napster’s newly relaunched music service at no cost. International artists are joining MTV in a multimedia campaign to raise awareness of the impact of HIV and AIDS in South Africa. The “46664” initiative takes its name from the prisoner number of former South African president Nelson Mandela when he was jailed under the apartheid regime in his country. The father of pop stars Nick and Aaron Carter faces a criminal charge for allegedly shoving his wife to the ground during an argument over their separation, authorities said. Robert G. Carter, 50, was arrested Thursday after the fight with his wife, Jane Carter, at their Marathon home, Monroe County sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin said Monday.
