Jimmy Eat World shines with new "Light"

“Big Casino,” the bombastic first single from rock band Jimmy Eat World’s new album is the story of an aging rocker laying out his version of reality. The Vegas-circuit character is explaining to a younger musician that “rock’n’roll is not all it’s cut out to be,” frontman Jim Adkins explains. “It’s kind of a loser anthem. It’s about a guy with unearned confidence whose assumption of worth is a protective front for total failure.” But Adkins stresses that the song is not a commentary on the band or on the music industry, noting, “We’re in a very good place.” Its new… Read more »

Backstreet Boys hope to restore fading fortunes

AJ McLean remembers the conversation well. Kevin Richardson was having doubts about his future in the Backstreet Boys, and one night in the dressing room after a 2005 show, he told his friends in the mega-selling boy band how he was feeling. “There’s some things I need to do first, for me,” McLean recalled Richardson saying. The group had been discussing “when we wanted to start recording again,” McLean said. “Everyone was ready, but that was the first time Kevin put it out in the atmosphere that he wasn’t.” The Boys needed some time to digest Richardson’s news. In June… Read more »

Vivendi condemned as “indecent” the contract terms between its Universal Music Group (UMG) unit and Apple Inc, the computer maker whose iTunes online store dominates the digital music market. Vivendi is one of many large media companies that are trying to challenge Apple’s grip on the digital entertainment market and obtain more control over pricing. It said it was in talks with rival distributors. “The split between Apple and (music) producers is indecent… Our contracts give too good a share to Apple,” Vivendi Chief Executive Jean-Bernard Levy told reporters at a gathering on Monday organized by the association of media… Read more »

iPod and MP3s are killing music

MUSIC PRODUCERS are upset that the fad for MP3s and Ipods is killing off well-made music. They say that most of the files which are being distributed represent less than 10 percent of the original music. Most of the data is junked during computer analysis and squeezed down until it fits through the Interweb tubes. According to Seattle Pi, a CD contains less than half the information stored to studio hard drives during recording. And when compressed by MP3 and similar formats only a minuscule fraction of the actual live event survives. Record producer Phil Ramone, who has recorded everyone… Read more »

Internet Radio Hears the Sound of Defeat

Amid continued controversy over applying the Fairness Doctrine to radio, the controversy over charging webcasters millions in retroactive royalty fees has seemingly come to a conclusion. Still, many broadcasters claim they cannot afford the increased fees and might go silent forever. At the hearing, the committee explored ways of revising the regulations that aimed to maintain a wide variety of listening options while also ensuring that artists are… Read more »

Paris Hilton Back to Jail in Hysterics

For a few hours on Friday (June 8), it looked like Paris Hilton wasn’t even going to show up for a hearing to determine whether she would be sent back to jail. And then, when she finally did make it to the courthouse, she probably wished she hadn’t. Judge Michael Sauer ordered Hilton back to jail, to serve out “the remainder of her sentence,” after a brief hearing, despite her lawyer’s pleas that a return would be “dangerous” to the heiress.
