Dogg, Dre "Wash''-ed up – Review

There is something almost infuriating about the cynicism displayed by the makers of “The Wash,” a mild and lazy comedy designed for quick play-off in urban markets. Pic, which opened Nov. 14 without press previews, is a sloppy and shoddy piece of work, filled with just about every cliche and caricature common to low-budget, low-brow comedies with predominantly African-American casts. Producers obviously felt they didn’t need to provide anything more substantial or original to wring cash from target audience. But spotty box office may prove them wrong. Rapper-actors Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg don’t exactly stretch themselves in lead roles… Read more »

Lit Has Big Rock Show Dreams

With its current club tour limiting the stage show that it can present, Lit can only fantasize about the full-blown production it would like to bring to its fans in support of its upcoming album, Atomic, due October 16 from Dirty Martini/RCA. Guitarist Jeremy Popoff tells LAUNCH that there’s no shortage of concepts possible for their big rock show. “We have ideas for days, like ramps and things,” he says. “You know, at some point we want to buy the Bon Jovi swing that he went over the audience with, and the elevator that he comes up out of the… Read more »

Timbaland Says He And Dr. Dre Might Do Album Together

When you’re one of the game’s most sought-after producers, working with somebody of your choice is usually not that difficult. Unless, of course, it’s another heavily sought-after producer you’re looking to work with. In August, Timbaland said he was hoping he and Dr. Dre could juggle their hectic schedules long enough to work on a major collaboration. “I want to do a Dr. Dre/Timbaland album,” he said. “We’ve been talking about that. We’re trying to do something real crazy.” On Thursday, Tim said it looks like that project is becoming more of a reality. “[We’ve] been talking about doing an… Read more »

Tragedy May Force Recall Of New Dream Theater Album

The hard rock band Dream Theater and EastWest Records are putting together a plan for how to deal with the group’s new concert album, Live Scenes From New York, which came out Tuesday (September 11). The album’s cover depicts the World Trade Center towers, the Statue Of Liberty, and the New York skyline engulfed by flames. An EastWest spokeswoman said that because of the disarray in New York City following Tuesday’s tragedy, company executives had not been able to fully address the situation. “It’s an unfortunate coincidence,” she said, “An eerie coincidence.” A decision on whether or not to pull… Read more »

Dr. Dre Delivers The Truth…

Dr. Dre’s hip-hop empire Aftermath Entertainment, will release the first female singer/songwriter, Truth Hurts’, in October 2001. She’s not a glorified hip-hop queen; her talent delves much deeper. The St. Louis, Missouri native studied classical and opera vocals for eight years, perfected her chops singing in gospel church choirs as an adult, and has co-written songs for Eric Benet, Shanice and Monifah. If there’s anything hip-hop about her, it’s her attitude that permeates a brutal honesty that could only be honed by the likes of Dr. Dre, R Kelly, Organized Noise, DJ Quik and Tim & Bob, who all contribute… Read more »

Xzibit had just flown to New York on Sunday after bringing the ruckus all night at a Baltimore concert, and he was in desperate need of a quicker picker upper. “I didn’t even know it was Sunday,” he told one of the members of his small entourage on the way to breakfast. “I just went to the [Loud Records] office and they were closed.” The best way of waking up for the Golden State mic warrior isn’t Folgers coffee.
