Police, Tool, White Stripes Confirmed for Bonnaroo

Sure, you may have read all about the lineup for the 2007 Bonnaroo Festival on various music blogs early Tuesday (February 13), but as it turns out, most of that “information” – and by “most,” we mean roughly 30 percent – was incorrect (we’re as shocked as you are). So here, for your viewing pleasure, is the official, 100 percent confirmed ‘Roo lineup. The Police, Tool and the White Stripes top an initial list of more than 70 artists scheduled to appear at Bonnaroo ’07, to be held June 14-17 in Manchester, Tennessee. Others on that list include Wilco, Franz… Read more »

Tool's Maynard James Keenan Says He's Found Jesus

Has Maynard James Keenan, the frontman of both the dark, heavy-metal art band Tool and the somewhat lighter A Perfect Circle, found Jesus and been born again? Well… Recent postings on two Tool Web sites – one of them purportedly by Keenan himself – contend that the singer has found religion and has left Tool. Could this really be? On Tuesday afternoon (April 5), MTV News’ Kurt Loder e-mailed Keenan for confirmation, and this is what he e-mailed back: “I did, in fact, find Jesus. More news to follow. God bless ya.” Keenan’s letter to fan site toolshed.down.net explains that… Read more »

Rush Return From Tragic Hiatus Sounding More Like Tool

The song “One Little Victory” starts with flailing militaristic drums, followed by a churning down-tuned guitar riff that drips with angst. It sounds like Tool covering P.O.D. Strangely, it’s Rush, a band that was around when Judas Priest and Iron Maiden were considered “new metal” and Rush members Geddy Lee (vocals/bass), Alex Lifeson (guitar) and Neil Peart (drums) were articulate mavericks carving out their own iconoclastic space. Some things never change. The track is from Vapor Trails, due May 14, and it’s a major triumph for Rush. Not only does it represent a commitment to remain sonically relevant, it marks… Read more »

Tool Stretch Out And Slow Down In Show With King Crimson

There might be a better setting for a Tool concert, but it doesn’t exist in waking life: The prehistoric, rugged beauty of Red Rocks Amphitheater felt almost threatening when serving as the physical backdrop for the band’s volcanic performance on Friday night, which opened a brief tour with prog-rock veterans King Crimson. Flanked by rock formations pushed up from the bubbling earth more than 60 million years ago (and donning a bald head, sporadic body paint and a black leather bodice), Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan looked like an androgynous ambassador of the apocalypse. Judging by the capacity crowd –… Read more »

Tool Tap Fantomas For East Coast Tour

While West Coast Tool fans will be treated to King Crimson as show openers, those on the East Coast will be primed by the sonic antics of Fantômas. The tour, supporting the band’s second album, The Director’s Cut (see “Patton Scores With Second Fantômas LP”), will be routed to hit major markets such as New York; Boston; Philadelphia; Portland, Maine; Washington, D.C.; Albany, New… Read more »
