Weezer has delayed the special edition reissue of its self-titled 1994 debut album, according to the band’s official web site. A DVD of the band’s history has also been pushed back. Both items were originally due out by the end of this year, but will now probably surface in 2004, due to what a posting on the site called “overall schedule planning at the record label.” The new edition of Weezer is expected to emerge as a double-disc set, featuring an elaborate booklet, lyrics, liner notes, B-sides, rarities, and some previously unheard material. Biggie and Tupac, Jay-Z and Nas, Axl and Kurt, Oasis and the bulk of humanity… some musical beefs are sublime, and some are ridiculous. The latest, between Weezer and Saves the Day, is a little bit of both. The Strokes have announced the five dates that they will open for Weezer. The band will open for Rivers Cuomo and crew starting July 15 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Opening all of Weezer’s dates are Dashboard Confessional and Sparta. While already extremely popular in the U.K., the Strokes’ success at home in the U.S. also continues to expand, if at a slower pace. When drummer Pat Wilson described Weezer’s latest live show tendencies recently, he separately mentioned Neil Diamond, Spinal Tap, Tool and Phish in a matter of minutes. Needless to say, the band’s summer tour should be interesting. Dates have not been announced, but Wilson and frontman Rivers Cuomo said Weezer will spend six weeks hitting amphitheaters across America with Dashboard Confessional beginning in mid-July. Right behind Diddy’s top-slot finish, albums by Cam’ron, Weezer and Moby will bump the former chart champ, Musiq, down to #5. Matt Sharp, founding bassist for Weezer, has filed a lawsuit against his former bandmates, their ex-manager and a slew of band accountants seeking compensation and credit for songs on Weezer’s first two albums. Weezer shot the video for its latest single, “Dope Nose,” at Griffith Park in Los Angeles on Monday (April 8). The video was shot at night and features the band performing wearing bizarre costumes, an unorthodox drum kit, and motorcycles on display. For the clip, the speed of the film was altered-either speeded up or slowed down-to get a sort of Benny Hill effect, according to the band’s website. Rocking a stadium is no mean trick. Plenty of bands do stadium tours because they’ve got the audience, but the ability to blow the roof off a 5,000-seat venue doesn’t mean you can knock ’em dead in an arena. Some have done it – get your hands on Cheap Trick’s Live at Budokan and hear the decibels erupt – but many have not. Platonically, Weezer is a band fit for arena rock. For any young band, the idea of performing before thousands on their first arena tour is a daunting proposal.
