The decision by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) to seek out individuals who illegally trade music on peer-to-peer networks sparked a congressional inquiry Thursday. Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., asked the recording industry trade group to turn over copies of the subpoenas it issued to Internet providers under the controversial Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Coleman said he feared that the RIAA was being too heavy-handed in its pursuit of Internet music pirates. Dozens of small stores have been given two weeks to clear their racks of pirated CDs, tell where they got them and pay damages to the five largest record labels, an industry group said on Monday. The Recording Industry Association of America said 78 small retailers across the U.S. – mostly gas stations and convenience and grocery stores – received the demands after investigators purchased pirated CDs at their stores. Trey Anastasio spent 17 years ripping genres apart and sticking them back together at odd angles with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink uber-jam band Phish. So maybe it’s no surprise he’s whipped up another unusual concoction: a jam/swing hybrid dotted with sugary-sweet love songs and chamber music. The Goo Goo Dolls release their latest effort, Gutterflower, on Tuesday (April 9). The Goo Goo Dolls’ 1998 album, Dizzy Up The Girl, reached sales of more than 3 million copies. Blink-182 side project Boxcar Racer played their debut show Monday night, exhausting their supply of songs as well as their frontman, singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge. Halfway through the band’s 40-minute set at the Mira Mesa Epicentre, a sweat-drenched DeLonge moaned, “F-, I’m tired. I’m out of shape.” Though more likely he just wasn’t used to being the sole focus of attention. C-Murder, who was arrested last week on suspicion of committing second-degree murder, will plead not guilty, according to his lawyer, who said his client is a victim of mistaken identity. The rapper, whose real name is Corey Miller, was arrested January 18 in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, where he is accused of killing 16-year-old Steve Thomas with a single gunshot to the chest during an argument on January 12 at the Platinum Club in Harvey.
