Listen.Com Removes Interactive Elements From Service

In return, the RIAA withdrew its attempt to have the company removed from the standard Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP) rate-setting policy. In a move that ends a complicated series of lawsuits and counter-suits for embattled online music concern Listen.com, the company has withdrawn from a suit filed by Digital Media Association (DiMA) and a group of music sites. In doing so, Listen made a pact with the RIAA to remove some features from its service that record labels find objectionable. Two interactivity features, one that allow listeners to either skip a song entirely, and another that allows users to… Read more »

Weezer Breeze Through 12 Demos For Next LP

When Weezer said they wanted to get back into the studio as soon as possible after the release of their new album, they weren’t kidding. The band, who put out Weezer two weeks ago, spent Sunday in a Washington, D.C., recording studio laying down demos for 12 new songs, band assistant Karl Koch wrote on the official Weezer Web site. “A local D.C. studio was booked, and the session lasted from 2 p.m. [until] about midnight,” Koch wrote. “The guys worked at an extremely fast pace, but not due to rushing. They had practiced these songs a lot in the… Read more »

MusicNet Technology Demonstrated

Being first can be a serious competitive advantage, and in the increasingly crowded space for digital music distribution, it may be the “killer app”. According to a report from Webnoize, key record company executives received a demonstration of a fully functional subscription platform that will be employed on the recently announced service from BMG Entertainment, EMI Recorded Music, and AOL Time Warner’s Warner Music Group. Progress in the development of MusicNet, announced officially on April 2nd, has apparently been a well kept secret at RealNetworks, where engineers have been quietly working for nearly a year on the streaming technology the… Read more »

Aerosmith Thrilled, Steely Dan Unimpressed At Rock Hall Ceremony

Although the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has chosen to celebrate its rebel heroes with a black-tie dinner at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, the anarchic spirit of the form still permeated the air as the class of 2001 was inducted Monday night. There was presenter Keith Richards, beautifully rambling in tongues, the way all rock gods should, as he inducted Burton and Johnson. There was inductee Burke, looking like a sultan pimp in a sparkling burgundy suit and fur-trimmed cloak. There was Kid Rock diving headlong into Aerosmith’s past excesses as he inducted the band, joking of their 1977… Read more »

Aerosmith To Play With Kid Rock At Hall Of Fame Ceremony

When Kid Rock inducts never-say-die rockers Aerosmith into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, “Sweet Emotion” will be doubly apt in describing the scenario. Not only are Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer elated to be receiving such an honor, the group will perform its 1975 single with the rap-rocker at the induction ceremony, Perry, a self-confessed Rock-head, said Friday (March 16). As for Tyler’s take on being inducted, the singer modestly said, “Not bad for a bunch of guys that got kicked out of clubs for playing their own songs, right?”… Read more »
