Bruce Springsteen grabbed the top of the U.S. pop charts Wednesday with the debut of his somber, Sept. 11-influenced album, “The Rising,” the first all-new recording with his E Street Band since 1984. Teddy Riley, who has produced albums for Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, ‘N Sync ( news – web sites) and other acts, filed for protection from creditors in bankruptcy court. The 34-year-old R&B recording artist hopes to reorganize his finances under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy law. Riley’s bankruptcy attorney, Michael Lehman, said Riley didn’t have enough money to pay mounting income-tax liabilities. The filing shows Riley owes $1.45 million in federal income taxes for 1998-2001 and $243,855 in Virginia taxes for 1996-98 and 2001. He also owes Virginia Beach $35,417 in real estate taxes. Bad-boy rap artist Eminem has lobbed a four-letter word at Vice President Dick Cheney’s wife on his upcoming album, but the second lady is hardly running away to a secure, undisclosed location. Aaliyah leads nominees for next month’s second annual BET Awards, earning recognition for both her singing and acting. The Godfather of Soul performed his hit “I Got You (I Feel Good)” on the steps of the state Capitol as part of a Beach Music Day celebration. A proclamation was issued by Gov. Jim Hodges declaring James Brown as South Carolina’s Godfather of Soul and recognizing the 68-year-old singer for his commitment to music.
