Dave Grohl Sees A Fortune In Video Directing

Dave Grohl has called his Probot side project album a death metal Supernatural, but don’t look for it to dominate the Grammys or the Billboard albums chart. “It’s not unlike the Santana record in that it really kicks ass, but it’s not the kind of thing that you’d expect,” Grohl said backstage at Saturday’s KROQ Weenie Roast. “There’s a certain kind of person that will like the Probot record, and there aren’t that many of those people…. I mean, it’s not meant to, like, make money.” Probot’s album – which features Grohl, Zwan guitarist Matt Sweeney and Foo Fighters producer… Read more »

Lavigne, Sum 41 Juno Awards Winners

Country star Shania Twain didn’t get her wish when she won three prizes at the 32nd annual Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent of the Grammys, over the weekend. After winning the Country Recording of the Year nod at the untelevised ceremony in Ottawa on Saturday, she had said she would prefer not to win anything at the next day’s televised event because she wanted to concentrate on her role as host. Alas, she ended up nabbing the Artist of the Year and Fan Choice Awards the next day. “I’m here to host the show and perform,” Twain said Saturday at a… Read more »

It’s another record for The Boss. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have added two more dates at Giants Stadium after tickets for the original seven shows in July sold out Saturday. Tickets for the new shows, Aug. 28 and 30, go on sale at 9 a.m. EST Saturday through Ticketmaster. Giants Stadium holds about 60,000. Springsteen, who won three Grammys this month for… Read more »

People Lists Best and Worst Grammy Looks

They may have both won Grammy Awards but the editors at People magazine say that India.Arie and Kelly Rowland were big losers when it came to fashion. The magazine’s website list what it considers some of the fashion faux pas at the awards show, and Arie and Rowland didn’t make the cut. The magazine says it liked Arie’s haircut but her outfit needed improvement. Rowland’s outfit left much to be desired as well, according to the editors. India.Arie won Grammys for best R&B album and Urban/Alternative Performance. Kelly Rowland took home a statue for best Rap/Sung Collaboration, “Dilemma,” that she… Read more »

Bee Gees Receive Honorary Grammy Award

Bee Gees Barry and Robin Gibb received an honorary Grammy Award Sunday night without their brother, Maurice, who died last month. The third member of pioneering disco trio died Jan. 12 of a heart attack before undergoing emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage. “I think this is just a little bit harder than Robin and I imagined it could ever be,” said Barry Gibb, who received a standing ovation with his brother when they walked on stage. “It’s getting harder.” He went on to pay tribute to his late brother’s wife, son and daughter. “The measure of a man is… Read more »

Vignettes From the Grammy Awards

Despite concerns that the Grammy Awards would become a forum for anti-war sentiment, most political messages were muted. “NO WAR” was written in silver letters on Sheryl Crow’s guitar strap as she performed, although her hair usually covered up most of the “NO.” Bonnie Raitt slipped in a four-word message, “let’s build some peace,” before handing out an award. And No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani wore a halter top emblazoned with the word, “love,” and combat fatigue hot pants. “I hope we all are in agreeance that this war should go away as soon as possible,” said Limp Bizkit lead singer… Read more »

Simon, Garfunkel Reunite After 10 Years

Setting aside the famous fractures of their friendship, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunited Sunday to open the Grammy Awards show with their Vietnam era ballad “The Sound of Silence.” The folk-rock duo, which sold millions of records in the 1960s before breaking up, was honored with a lifetime achievement award by the Grammys. Other such honorees included Etta James, Johnny Mathis, Glenn Miller and Tito Puente. Simon and Garfunkel have reunited periodically since ending their partnership, but this was believed to be their first performance together since 1993. Their appearance led to speculation that they may tour together, but… Read more »

Celine Dion Joins Super Bowl Festivities

Celine Dion will be part of the pre-game festivities at the Super Bowl. She’ll sing “God Bless America” before the game on Jan. 26. The Dixie Chicks will sing the National Anthem. “Anyone who tells you there’s no pressure to sing the national anthem live to one of the biggest television audiences on the planet is not telling the truth,” group member Emily Robison said Wednesday. The trio was nominated for four Grammy Awards this week, including album of the year for “Home.” They already have four other Grammys. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning Dion is to appear at Caesars Palace’s… Read more »

Uncle Sells Eminem's Childhood Home

A modest, 1 1/2-story house in a rough-edged neighborhood of this Detroit suburb is up for sale on eBay for a minimum bid of $120,000, though city records show it’s worth about $47,000. What the records don’t show is that the house is the boyhood home of rap and movie star Eminem. Todd Nelson, Eminem’s uncle, recently sold the house for $45,000 to lawyer Sebastian Lucido and his partner, Macomb County commissioner and real estate developer Roland Fraschetti. Lucido and Fraschetti put it up for sale on the Internet auction site Thursday. Eminem, born Marshall Bruce Mathers III in St.… Read more »

Rapper Eminem Gets More Respect

Until recently, it seemed only kids – and music critics – could love Eminem. Politicians condemned his obscenity-laced and violent lyrics. Gay and women’s groups blasted him as a homophobe and misogynist. The Grammy-winning Detroit rapper had millions in album sales, but little love from mainstream America. Well, he’s still not America’s sweetheart. But some of the vitriol directed at Eminem has diminished – replaced not just by grudging respect, but by downright enthusiasm from some unlikely quarters. “The guy is funny, smart, and sometimes shocking,” author Stephen King gushed on his Web site. “Those are all things I look… Read more »
