Lollapalooza kicks off on Saturday (July 5) in Indianapolis, Indiana, two days after the original start date in Ionia, Michigan (July 3), which was cancelled before the start of the tour. Sire Records, the label that introduced the world to Madonna, Talking Heads and the Ramones, is being resurrected and will officially rejoin the Warner Bros. Records family of labels. Label founder Seymour Stein’s first signing under the new deal is the Von Bondies. Also on the Sire roster are Morcheeba, Guster, the Distillers, Hot Hot Heat, Less Than Jake and the Hives (through a joint venture with Burning Heart/Epitaph). Face To Face, Andrew W.K., Rancid, and the Used are among the initial group of bands signed up for Warped Tour 2003. Andrew W.K. will only play West Coast gigs while the Transplants are booked only for the East Coast. Others on the bill include Less Than Jake, Suicide Machines, Dropkick Murphys, AFI, the Distillers, Poison The Well, Taking Back Sunday, Rufio, Finch, Brand New, the Starting Line, and Glassjaw, according to the tour’s website. The tiny, unassuming city of Devore, California, will be transformed into a punk-rock Mecca next month when it hosts a show featuring the Sex Pistols, X, Bad Religion, the Vandals, Unwritten Law, New Found Glory and others. The September 14 KROQ Inland Invasion concert at the 65,000-seat Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion will also feature the Damned, the Adolescents, the Distillers, T.S.O.L. and G.B.H, according to a source close to the show. The Transplants, a punk supergroup composed of drummer Travis Barker of Blink-182 and singer-guitarist Tim Armstrong and bassist Matt Freeman of Rancid, will release their debut album in September on Hellcat Records. “I got a call from Tim and he said, ‘What’s up? You’re my favorite drummer,’” says Barker. “I said, ‘Really? Bad Religion has lined up a string of tour dates in support of its upcoming release, Process Of Belief, including a trio of Los Angeles shows following the album’s January 22 release. The group, which recently welcomed back into the lineup co-founding member and Epitaph Records boss Brett Gurewitz, will perform at four record release parties, beginning January 23 in San Francisco and then three shows at different clubs on L.A.’s famed Sunset Strip on January 24-26.
