High Court Rejects Mattel Appeal on Barbie Song


The U.S. Supreme Court rejected on Monday an appeal by Mattel Inc. over its lawsuit against MCA Records Inc. claiming the 1997 pop hit “Barbie Girl” had infringed on the toy maker’s doll trademark. Without comment, the justices let stand a federal appeals court ruling dismissing the lawsuit on the ground the song by the Danish band “Aqua” was parody and social commentary covered by the U.S. Constitution’s free-speech protections. 'Barbie Girl' Band Reportedly Will Disband


Music group Aqua, the cornerstone of Denmark’s pop industry and a major export earner, is to disband, Danish media has reported. “We are taking a break until further notice,” the London-based band said. “Our group has lost its sparkle.” Local media interpreted the announcement on Wednesday as signaling the break-up of one Denmark’s greatest successes ever on the international pop music scene.
