Backstreet Boy Nick Carter has agreed to take part in a pretrial intervention program in order to bring a misdemeanor charge against him to a resolution. Carter was charged with resisting or opposing a law-enforcement officer without violence after he refused an officer’s orders to leave Tampa’s Pop City nightclub on January 2. Under the terms of the deal with state prosecutors, Carter will face probation, perform community service, and pay an undisclosed fine. Nick Carter, the youngest (and arguably cutest) of the Backstreeters, has avoided jail time and disappointed any would-be cellmates by making a deal with prosecutors in a case stemming from a barroom altercation last month. Perhaps because it’s so hard to honor someone with a fart joke, Blink-182 singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge has formed a side project called Boxcar Racer to pay tribute to the bands that influenced him. The group, which also includes Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and Over My Dead Body guitarist Dave Kennedy, will release its still-untitled debut album on May 14. Blink-182 guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker have used the band’s brief downtime to write and record a new record of more experimental material under the name Boxcar Racer. Rhythm guitarist Dave Kennedy, an old pal of DeLonge’s, and formerly of the San Diego straight-edge hardcore outfit Over My Dead Body rounds out the lineup. The side project’s debut is due out in mid-May on Blink’s label, MCA Records, and Blink’s other member, bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus, sings on one track. Adam Ant, the punk-turned-pop musician who scored hits in the 1980s, faces assault and weapons charges after a scuffle in a London pub, police said Monday. The 47-year-old singer, whose real name is Stuart Goddard, was arrested Saturday night at the Prince of Wales pub in north London. He was charged with possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, and with criminal damage and assault. He allegedly attacked a man in his 40s, police said. Olivia Harrison, widow of the late George Harrison, has sued her former brother-in-law in regards to some Harrison memorabilia stolen from a home the family used to own in Los Angeles. Harrison filed the suit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday (January 11) against her sister Linda Arias’s ex-husband Carl Roles and his current wife Carol Roles, accusing the couple of wrongfully possessing, selling, and profiting from the material, which is described as “household and personal items of sentimental value.” The suit asks for return of the property, unspecified damages (including interest), and attorney’s fees and other costs. A long-running dispute over four famous guitars that once belonged to the late Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia has been resolved, with the instruments to be divided between remaining band members and the man who crafted them, lawyers said Tuesday. Under the agreement, guitar maker Doug Irwin will get custody of guitars dubbed “Wolf” and “Tiger” for their decorative inlays, while the Grateful Dead will keep two other instruments “It’s all signed and inked. Las Vegas wasn’t paradise city for Slash when he tried to check out Guns N’ Roses at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino late last month. It seems the band’s former guitarist wasn’t welcome to the jungle. Slash, who quit the group in 1996 and later formed Slash’s Snakepit, said he was in Vegas on vacation when he learned that GN’R would be playing there in two weeks’ time, on New Year’s Eve and two days before. Pressplay (www.pressplay.com), the online music service launched Dec. 19, is an order of magnitude better than rival MusicNet (www.musicnet.com), which launched Dec. 4. The gap is so great that I don’t think MusicNet deserves to sign up a single additional subscriber without first undertaking a major overhaul to match pressplay. Not that pressplay is perfect; the major record labels are still struggling to figure out how to sell their music online without opening the door to further piracy. Jay-Z received a three-year probation sentence Thursday (December 6) from Judge Micki Scherer for stabbing music executive Lance “Un” Rivera in December 1999, according to a spokesperson for New York’s District Attorney’s office. The top rapper admitted to committing the crime in court on October 17. Jay-Z stabbed Rivera in the stomach while attending the December 2, 1999 release party for Q-Tip’s Amplified at New York’s Kit Kat Klub.
