U2 frontman Bono was honored for his humanitarian work on Saturday (January 17) by the widow of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coretta Scott King saluted Bono at the 2004 King Center Salute To Greatness awards in Atlanta, for his work on behalf of the AIDS epidemic in Africa and for Third World debt relief. R.E.M. made unique chart history today with “In Time: The Best Of R.E.M. 1988-2003” debuting at #8 and #16 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, the first time the same album debuts twice in the Top 20 in the same week. Released on October 28th, “In Time” is for sale as both a single compact disc and double CD featuring the same initial piece and a second disc with rarities and b-sides compiled by the band. The Fight (from Dudley in the West Midlands) are back in the UK after touring the USA since January, to support US punk band ‘Rancid’. The Fight met up with Rancid’s lead singer Tim Armstrong whilst performing the Californian leg of the Vans Warped Tour, where he asked them to support Rancid on their tour of the UK. While several artists have distanced themselves from the online music store because it makes tracks available individually, the Canadian singer is supporting the new service by giving iTunes an exclusive live EP. White, the rock duo’s 27-year-old guitarist/singer, sustained a broken left index finger in a car crash Wednesday in his native Detroit, a band publicist confirms. Details of the crash were sketchy. Detroit police said they had no report on the accident. A flack for the White Stripes knew only of the location (Detroit), the broken finger (one) and the time of the accident (1 p.m.). Spoofing the pop star’s infamous baby-dangling incident that took place last November in Germany, Slim Shady actually tossed his “baby” up in the air on Tuesday in Glasgow, Scotland. No, it wasn’t his daughter, Hailie – this baby was a life-size blonde-haired baby doll, seemingly masked, which a surgical-mask-wearing Em held above the crowd, tossed up, and caught by its head. The White Stripes’ much-heralded new album “Elephant” (XL Recordings) stampeded the U.K. chart on Sunday, going straight to No. 1, while “Make Luv” by Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham (Positiva) retained its place at the top of the singles chart.
