The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ MusiCares Foundation will bestow its annual Person of the Year award on Billy Joel next year. If there’s an upside to Poison bassist Bobby Dall’s recent emergency back surgery, it’s that the hair metal kings have had time off the road to write their next album. A Beatles’ shop in Liverpool, the birthplace of the world’s most famous band, has put what it says is a previously unreleased audio version of the last public recording by guitarist George Harrison on its Web site. MTV, the once invincible music station, almost lost its place on one of the UK’s biggest cable networks because of competition from new stations developed by the British magazines, Q and Smash Hits. It has been forced to lower its charges dramatically in order to remain accessible to viewers signed up to Telewest.
