Britney Spears doesn’t have to appear at a hearing next week to seek a permanent order to keep an alleged stalker away, a judge ruled. Superior Court Judge Alan Haber also ruled that Spears can skip a question-and-answer with the lawyer for Japanese businessman Masahiko Shizawa. “I don’t think (ordering her appearance) would add up to anything but additional harassment,” Haber said Monday. Britney Spears and Metallica will reprise their roles as awards-show performers when they hit the stage for the 31st annual American Music Awards, taking place at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on November 16, according to a show spokesperson. Ashanti, Hilary Duff and Alan Jackson round out the preliminary list of performers. Additional artists are expected to be announced later. Madonna will appear on “Me Against the Music,” the first single from Britney Spears’ new album, “Get in the Zone,” out Nov. 18 on Jive. According to sources, the pair decided to collaborate as they were prepping their Aug. 28 MTV Video Music Awards appearance with Christina Aguilera. They then clearly sealed the deal with a kiss on the lips during their performance. The single, which was co-written by Spears, goes to radio Sept. 30. The video will debut Oct. 13 on MTV.

Britney Spears previewed another new song this weekend, but instead of broadcasting it to a live audience, she debuted it to a Las Vegas crowd in a surprise – and steamy – performance. Spears took the stage at Rain, a nightclub within the Palms hotel-casino, at 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
