After a long time out in the cold, Elektra Records has been generating some serious heat on the album charts in recent weeks. When album sales data for the week ended May 27 are released on Wednesday morning, the Warner Music label is expected to secure the No. 1 spot with “Break the Cycle,” the prophetically titled second album from white-hot metal band Staind. Napster Recruiting Users To Test Pay Service


Nearly eight months after it was first announced, Napster appears to be almost ready to launch its new pay-as-you-go, copyright-friendly service. The company has begun recruiting users for a beta test of the new version at the Napster Web site, with testing expected to begin within a month, and the full-on launch of the new service set for sometime this summer. RIAA Forms Compliance Task Force


RIAA and NARM will seek to institute revised voluntary restrictions in response to FTC criticism that the industry markets inappropriate materials to kids The Recording Industry Association of America has announced plans to form a task force to investigate ways to answer criticisms levied in the Federal Trade Commission’s May 1 report that accused the music industry of marketing to children products it labeled as explicit.
