Music publishers and songwriters said Tuesday they had joined the growing list of media companies suing file-sharing company Aimster for copyright infringement, saying that the service is trying to fill the void left by Napster. The lawsuit was filed last week in a Manhattan Federal Court by a group including legendary songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who penned “Jailhouse Rock” and music publishers Criterion Music, Famous Music, and The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization. “We are extremely disappointed that before the ink was even dry on Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ opinion concluding that Napster was engaging in massive copyright… Read more »

Internet media network Yahoo! Tower Records Puts Spin On Bankruptcy Speculation

Tower Records, the worldwide music, book and video retailer that began in a family drug store, is downplaying the possibility it may have to file for bankruptcy because of tightening credit. “We have no present intention to file bankruptcy,” company spokeswoman Louise Solomon said Friday, two days after Moody’s Investors Service downgraded Tower’s debt ratings. Moody’s said it was likely that Tower would file for bankruptcy protection if it could not find additional sources of capital or pay off its current loans in the next few months. In a recent Securities and Exchange Commission report, Tower said its revolving credit… Read more »

Moulin Rouge's 'Lady Marmalade' Makes History

A live action musical might have a hard road to travel at the mainstream movie box office but music from Baz Luhrmann’s film Moulin Rouge (Twentieth Century Fox/Interscope Records) is proving to have surprising “legs” thanks to its intriguing – and now history-making – hip-hop-pop teaming of platinum superstars Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and Pink. Topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the fourth consecutive week, their cover of the LaBelle ’70s smash “Lady Marmalade” (produced by Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott and Rockwilder) has become the first airplay-only track in history to stay at #1 for more than one week.… Read more »

A Flashy Night For Movie Stars

Stars figured they could say and do just about anything at the 2001 MTV Movie Awards on Saturday night. “And I’m gonna,” presenter Halle Berry predicted two hours before she took the stage with her Swordfish co-stars, John Travolta and Hugh Jackman. Playing off the rumor (which she later denied) that she received an extra $500,000 to show her breasts in her upcoming action movie, Berry encouraged the two men to show a body part. Then she patted their buns as they playfully unbuttoned their jackets in striptease fashion. It was all part of the fun that took place at… Read more »
