FCC Radio Rules Under New Scrutiny

Any effort to rewrite the latest federal rules for radio must include a broad investigation into such issues as “pay-for-play” and artist intimidation, according to music and artists’ groups. Michael Bracey, director of government relations for the Future of Music Coalition, says his group wants the Federal Communications Commission to examine “pay-for-play and vertical integration” in the radio industry. The group opposes FCC rule changes that were enacted June 7. And Jay Rosenthal, co-counsel of the Recording Artists’ Coalition (RAC), wants the commission to follow up on reports of artist intimidation. “The FCC can no longer ignore evidence of radio… Read more »

Will Smith Stages Biggest Intergalactic Space Concert Of All Time

Rest assured, Will Smith will rid the world of aliens again, but first, he’ll perform for them. While the first single from the “Men in Black 2” soundtrack, “Black Suits Comin’ (Nod Ya Head),” is gaining popularity, Smith deliberately steered clear of the tried-and-true methods of creating a summer hit – heavy samples and big-name cameos – so as not to oversell the song, a Sony Pictures publicist said. But you know Smith, he can’t keep that simplicity up for long. Especially when there’s a video to be shot. The clip, directed by Francis Lawrence, features Smith, clad in the… Read more »

Photographer Catches Britney Smoking

A photographer has caught pop star Britney Spears on film smoking a cigarette, after she’s been preaching for years that she was against the habit. The 20-year-old singer once told the News-Sentinel in Knoxville, Tenn., “I don’t believe in drugs or even smoking. I believe in God.” The New York Post is carrying the photo today showing the singer, dressed in short-shorts, apparently turning her back to the photographer. The paper quotes the singer’s spokeswoman as issuing a “no response” when asked whether Britney’s smoking might encourage her young followers to light up. Spears has been challenging her good girl… Read more »

'Gigantic' Film Looks Under They Might Be Giants' Mink Coat

Few bands have a résumé as extensive as the one belonging to They Might Be Giants, so it’s no wonder their music should make perfect fodder for a documentary. In their 20 years together, the quirky duo of John Linnell and John Flansburgh have successfully telemarketed themselves into underground celebrity, composed scores and theme music for television and film, and won a Grammy (for “Boss of Me,” the theme to “Malcolm in the Middle”), while recording seven studio LPs and a slew of EPs, live albums and singles. Flansburgh even found time to moonlight as a video director, helming clips… Read more »
