Members Of Godsmack, Screaming Trees Remember Layne Staley

While Alice in Chains – whose singer, Layne Staley, was found dead Friday – influenced an incalculable number of bands, perhaps no one echoes their legacy like Godsmack. From Tony Rambola’s jarring bursts of guitar to Sully Erna’s angry, impassioned vocal delivery, Godsmack have sonically followed Alice in Chains’ lead while adding their own distinctive edge. To Erna, Staley was more than just part of the grunge foundation on which bands like Godsmack, Creed, Tantric and Puddle of Mudd built their sound. The Alice in Chains singer’s raw urgency vaulted the former drummer front and center before one of today’s… Read more »

Grammys Tune Into Year of Turmoil

Forget J-Lo’s naval and Eminem’s foul mouth. The 44th annual Grammy Awards Wednesday had weightier issues to contend with as artists and performers sought to soothe the nation with humor and song after a year of turmoil within the music industry and in the United States. From heightened security, to performers’ songs and to host Jon Stewart’s jokes, the devastating attacks on America of Sept. 11 hovered in the background of the music industry’s most glamorous night. When Stewart came onstage at the Staples Center, he walked through a dummy metal detector, which gonged off and sent huge security guards… Read more »

Billy Idol Sweats! Sweats! Sweats! The Hits Onstage

Billy Idol rang in the summer solstice Thursday night with a tight, concise and energetic show befitting one of glam-punk’s most sovereign and feisty pioneers. At 45, His Right and Honorable Rude Dude can still whip crowds into giddy submission, as the 2,000 or so nostalgists and newcomers attending his Kiss the Skull Tour at the Fillmore happily discovered. With the house lights lowered, an introduction of ambient synth washes conjured visions of deep space nebulae (or any fantasy H.R Giger might dream up), before Idol sauntered out, trademark sneer intact, for the first of a long string of chartbusters:… Read more »

Stone Temple Pilots are vying to be the first band in space. They donned red astronaut suits on Thursday for their “Days of the Week” video, in which they play door-to-door salesmen who escape their monotonous lives by blasting into space and rocking out on an unidentified planet. “Who looks better in a spacesuit – me or Ben Affleck?” singer Scott Weiland joked during a break, referring to the actor’s astronaut role in the 1998 film “Armageddon.” The “Days of the Week” clip, directed by Kevin Kerslake – who also helmed STP’s “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline” videos – opens… Read more »
