Marilyn Manson Reciprocates Divorce

No big surprise, but apparently Marilyn Manson is more of a Halloween guy. At least, that’s the holiday he cited as the date on which he and estranged wife Dita Von Teese went their separate ways, disputing her claim that the glam-Goth twosome uncoupled on Christmas Eve. Manson counter-filed for divorce last Friday in an attempt to block Von Teese from being awarded spousal support, although the burlesque performer did not request it when she filed her own divorce petition Dec. 29. Her heavily made-up hubby has also stated that he wants Von Teese to pay her own attorney fees,… Read more »

Indie band has Hands-on expertise in music biz

It’s New Year’s Eve in New York and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is headlining the buzziest indie rock bill in town. The eclectic quintet — which has risen to notoriety for selling more than 110,000 copies of its 2005 debut album in the United States without the help of a record label — has plenty to celebrate. The band is using the show at Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom to preview a half-dozen tracks from its self-released sophomore set, “Some Loud Thunder,” due January 30. CYHSY’s most rabid fans don’t need much of an introduction to some of the new material.… Read more »

Year End Readers' Poll: Avril And Simple Plan's Pierre Are S-E-X-Y

As promised yesterday, we’re back to update you on the remaining categories in Chart’s Year End Readers’ Poll. Yesterday we reported that Simple Plan were leading the votes in the music-based categories, but who are our readers rooting for in the Sexiest Canadian Musician categories? At press time, about 600 of you had filled out the poll and the majority of you fancy Pierre Bouvier, lead singer of Simple Plan. In a distant second place in our Throw Your Underwear (Male) category is The Tea Party’s Jeff Martin, followed by the more, er, mature William Shatner, who is quite surprisingly… Read more »

Motley Crue to Reunite

Los Angeles – The original members of 1980s glam metal band Motley Crue, which made hard living and wild sexcapades a centerpiece of their music and their lives, on Monday announced a world reunion tour. After a five-year hiatus, the big-haired, leather-clad Crue members are eager to slip back into the music, if not the lifestyle depicted in hit rockers like “Girls, Girls, Girls” and “Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room.” The band arrived Monday at the Hollywood Palladium in a hearse, sporting eye makeup. About 1,000 people cheered as the group opened with “Dr. Feelgood” following a news conference. With… Read more »

Jimmy Eat World Bloody Up Canada – Review

Jimmy Eat World completely bleed American, which might be why their Canadian visit to the Kool Haus (their second Toronto stop in the last couple of months) remained fairly conservative. Beginning as emo-pop cult favourites and now mid-deep in their crossover to sweaty arena-style power-pop, the Arizona quartet continues to churn out dorm-ready tales of teenage melodrama. Instead of pseudo-edgy, bleach-blonde glamourizing of teenhood tribulations, however, Jimmy Eat World present a more ragged – if no less romanticized – portrait of the American Eagle set: less cocaine, more beer stains; less OC, more One Tree Hill. Yet despite being mostly… Read more »

Destiny's Child 'Fulfilled' by New Album

Los Angeles – After a three-year hiatus, Destiny’s Child is picking up where it left off: at the top. “Lose My Breath,” the first single from the R&B trio’s hotly anticipated album “Destiny Fulfilled,” quickly marched its way to No. 3 on The Billboard Hot 100. Now industry observers are handicapping how the group’s sales destiny will be fulfilled following the release of its first album since 2001’s “Survivor.” The Sony Urban Music/Columbia album debuted this week at No. 19 on the Billboard 200, based on only three days of sales in the week ended Nov. 14. It officially went… Read more »

Avril, Chantal And Raine Shine At SOCAN Awards

It may not have the glitz and glamour of a televised performance-oriented awards show, but the annual SOCAN Awards honour something more important than pop-tart prancing: songwriting. Last night, the Society Of Composers, Authors And Music Publishers Of Canada handed out awards to the top songwriters in the country. Held at Toronto’s Carlu, the gala award dinner was hosted by Lawrence Gowan. Over the course of the evening, the body that pays songwriters their royalties (and keeps food on many of their tables) gave props to the most played songs of the year, as well as some golden oldies that… Read more »

Video Music Awards Sizzling but Shock Free

Holding its festivities for the first time in the city of skin, Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards was sizzling, energetic and colorful – yet tame, by MTV standards. There were no wardrobe malfunctions (sorry TiVo). Britney didn’t kiss Madonna like last year – or anyone else, for that matter (neither were at the blowout affair). The most skin shown was from Usher, who preened in front of the camera barechested as simulated raindrops fell on his chiseled body during the opening performance. Even the Christina Aguilera was classy, dressed sexy yet demurely as she debuted a jazzy number, “Tilt Ya… Read more »

New York Dolls Bassist Dies at 55

Arthur Kane, original bass guitarist for the 1970s-era punk rock group New York Dolls, has died of complications related to leukemia. He was 55. Kane died Tuesday after being admitted to a Los Angeles hospital and diagnosed with leukemia, said band manager Darren Hill. “He didn’t even know,” Hill said Thursday. “It wasn’t until he went into the hospital that afternoon that they diagnosed that.” The New York native had been suffering from severe flu-like symptoms for several days, forcing him to back out of a July 11 reunion show in Manchester, England, Hill said. In a statement on behalf… Read more »
