Review: Sugar Ray, Sugar Ray

Newport Beach doesn’t raise no quitters. Sugar Ray first presented themselves in 1995 as horn-dog pop funksters with Lemonade and Brownies and were roundly ignored. Floored appeared two years later with a gloss of self-parodying Swingers hip, and the lilting “Fly” took wing, planting band mouthpiece Mark McGrath’s chiseled cheekbones and parti-colored hair in front of every camera or mike that would pause long enough to listen to him joshingly appreciate his group’s success. Having been tagged nobodies and one-hit wonders, Sugar Ray got both mad and even, releasing 14:59 – their position on the clock of fleeting fame –… Read more »

MTV Will Give People Star Makeovers

If you’re sick of yourself, MTV can help you become one of your favorite music stars – at least for a little while. The cable music channel this week is launching a new show, “Becoming.” MTV will pick fans up in a limousine, give them makeovers, teach them choreography and let them recreate their favorite videos. Cameras will capture the transformation along the way, then show the finished product. The players were chosen from casting calls, fan Web sites, karaoke bars and college campuses. During the first week, fans will “become” Jennifer Lopez, Blink-182, Destiny’s Child and the Backstreet Boys.… Read more »

Korn, Kid Rock, Slipknot Reach Out To Ailing Death Frontman

The heavy metal community is uniting to help save one of its own. So, various artists – including Korn, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kid Rock and Slipknot – are auctioning off memorabilia on Allbeat.com to help Schuldiner’s family pay his medical bills. Stan's The Man

Dido had already delivered a solid hit album with her solo debut, No Angel. The ethereal collection of songs quietly chugged toward platinum status (“Here With Me” becoming the theme to the TV show “Roswell” helped) more than a year after its June 1999 release. The album finally cracked the Billboard 200 at #144 on May 21, 2000. Meanwhile, the one-time singer for trip-hop group Faithless toured as an opening act for the Barenaked Ladies and Sting, among others. Then Eminem stepped in. The X-rated rapper sampled Dido’s “Thank You” as the hook for “Stan” on his May 2000 Marshall… Read more »

Jane's Addiction Tour Will Likely Be Part Of Festival

Jane’s Addiction are finalizing plans for a summer reunion tour, which looks to be part of a roving festival frontman Perry Farrell is organizing. “We’re going to be taking out a show. It’s probably going to have different influences coming together and creating an ensemble,” Jane’s guitarist Dave Navarro said, “more like a traveling circus – whereas in most circuses there isn’t much of a headliner, but there’s a lot of things. Some people like the trapeze. Some people like the clowns.” Management for Jane’s Addiction said the band might also tour separately from the festival, which has taken on… Read more »

VH1 To Audition 2 Video Shows

VH1 is developing two pilots for weekly music video shows: one to highlight alternative bands that have crossed into the mainstream and the other to showcase female artists. The shows could air on the network in one to three months and will appear in various dayparts, VH1 executive vp music and talent Rick Krim said. The announcement was the first for Krim after joining VH1 about six weeks ago. He replaced Wayne Isaak, who left in January. Krim joined MTV in 1982 as business manager and rose to vp talent and artist relations. For the past six years, he was… Read more »
