Listen.com and The Harry Fox Agency License Digital Music Subscription Service


The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. (HFA), the licensing subsidiary of The National Music Publishers’ Association, Inc. (NMPA) and Listen.com, Inc. announced today that they have reached an agreement on the licensing of musical works for Rhapsody(TM), Listen.com ®’s digital music subscription service. This agreement is modeled on the terms of the agreement that the NMPA and HFA recently reached with the Recording Industry Association of America for licensing on-demand streaming and limited downloads offered by Internet music subscription services. Webcasting to be "Profitable Alternative"


The Yankee Group today released a new study that examines the viability of webcasting, even as online-only broadcasters such as Live365, RadioWave, ClickRadio, and NetRadio suffer losses, announce layoffs, and face the specter of shuttering operations altogether. Ryan Jones, the analyst who authored the report, said in the executive summary, “The challenges facing Internet-only webcasters are significant enough to keep broadcasters in the lead for the foreseeable future. MusicNet Names Alan McGlade President and CEO


MusicNet today announced the appointment of Alan McGlade as President and CEO. Loudeye Acquires Activate


Loudeye has announced plans to acquire Activate, a company that provides webcasting services. Loudeye has made several such acquisitions this year, in July snapping up assets of theDial, a Seattle based Internet radio programming that syndicates original programming; and buying Addition Systems, a streamed advertising firm in June. Online Music Sales Will Grow 520% To $6.2 Billion In 2006


Jupiter Media Metrix reports that U.S. consumer online music spending will grow from $1.0 billion in 2001 to $6.2 billion in 2006, a 43 percent annual growth rate over the next five years. According to the July 2001 Jupiter Internet Music Model, online music sales will represent seven percent of total U.S. music sales in 2001 and 32 percent in 2006. Songwriters, Publishers File Suit Against Aimster


Music publishers and songwriters said Tuesday they had joined the growing list of media companies suing file-sharing company Aimster for copyright infringement, saying that the service is trying to fill the void left by Napster.
