Piracy rate declining as legal options flourish


Although as many as 70% of 18–29 year olds in the United States confess having pirated music or videos online, only 1–2 percent of them do it on a significant scale, according to the results of a survey conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International.

New Mozart piece of music found in French library


A French museum has found a previously unknown piece of music handwritten by Mozart, a researcher said Thursday. The 18th century melody sketch is missing the harmony and instrumentation but was described as important find. Ulrich Leisinger, head of research at the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Austria, said there is no doubt that the single sheet was written by the composer. “This is absolutely new,” Leisinger said in a telephone interview. “We have new music here.” “His handwriting is absolutely clearly identifiable,” he added. “There’s no doubt that this is an original piece handwritten by Mozart.” The work, described… Read more »

Study finds U.S. music awash in booze and drugs


They have lyrics such as “Tequila makes her clothes fall off” and “Breakin down the good weed, rollin’ the blunt/Ghetto pimp tight girls say I’m the man.” U.S. popular music is awash with lyrics about drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Medical researchers have reviewed the words of the 279 top songs of 2005 to estimate just how common they are. Their report on Monday showed a third of the songs had explicit references to substance abuse. Cleaner sued over trashed Beatles photos


By Boxes of photographic material – including the only remaining original transparencies from a 1963 Beatles photo session – were thrown out by a cleaner despite a note warning they weren’t trash, a lawsuit filed in Britain’s High Court claims. Apple Corps. Ltd., guardian of the Fab Four’s commercial interests, and EMI Records Ltd., which distributes the Beatles’ music, filed the lawsuit against the cleaning company, Crystal Services PLC, earlier this year. The lawsuit, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, says more than 450 photographs, negatives and transparencies were lost, most of which were EMI’s photographic archive from 1997.
