Apple has quietly launched Mastered for iTunes, a push to deliver music “exactly as the artists and sound engineers intend it to be heard”, though the company maintains that iTunes Plus 256kbps AAC files are still sufficient rather than lossless. Britney Spears' new single "Womanizer" made a record-breaking leap to top spot on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart on Wednesday, underscoring her musical comeback after making headlines with her personal woes. Spice Girls concerts canceled


The Spice Girls have dropped Australia, China, South Africa and Argentina from their world tour, which reportedly has been drawing a disappointing turnout at some concerts. The Beatles are about to become radio stars in a whole new way. NASA on Monday will broadcast the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe” across the galaxy to Polaris, the North Star. This first-ever beaming of a radio song by the space agency directly into deep space is nostalgia-driven. Radiohead fleshes out European tour plans


Radiohead has confirmed 16 European summer concert dates for 2008, including an appearance at Denmark’s giant Roskilde Festival. The British rock band’s first confirmed concert will take place June 7 at the Malahide in Dublin. The tour, announced Wednesday on Radiohead’s official Web site, will roll on to France, Spain, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Germany. Universal Music buys stake in Loud.com


Universal Music Group said Wednesday it has acquired a stake in the operator of urban social networking Web site Loud.com. The deal is part of the music company’s strategy to gain new sources of revenue and media outlets for its stable of recording artists. The company, a unit of Paris-based Vivendi SA, did not disclose the size of its equity investment in the Web site, which also operates under the domain name Battlerap.com.
