Replacements Get Reissued

The early albums of indie rock legends the Replacements have been remastered and will be re-released by Restless Records on July 24th. However, the new CD pressings of the Minneapolis band’s first four Twin/Tone albums – 1981’s Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash, 1982’s Stink EP, 1983’s Hootenanny, and 1984’s landmark Let It Be – won’t contain any bonus tracks or additional artwork. The albums were remastered by Greg Calbi, who’s done mastering work for R.E.M., Paul McCartney, Sonic Youth and many others, and none of the band’s surviving original members – Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson and Chris… Read more »

Esquire Admits Fake Stipe Profile

Atlanta writer Tom Junod has no apologies for making up much of a profile on R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe for Esquire magazine, saying he wanted people to question celebrity journalism. In the profile for the June issue, Junod describes the 41-year-old Stipe eating all the sugar in a dispenser at a Los Angeles restaurant, then licking the top. He also writes about a five-hour limo trip to the Hoover Dam and recounts how Stipe sucks on two pennies and then sticks them on his eyelids. None of these things happened, Junod said. Esquire offers clues that the story is… Read more »

Shifty Shellshock Shell-Shocked

“I have butterflies in my stomach right now,” the Crazy Town singer said just before his band’s smooth “Butterfly” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in late April. “I’m so used to things going wrong,” Shellshock said. “Now that something good has happened to me, I’m just waiting for it to hit the mountaintop and roll back down.” Maybe he was worried that Crazy Town’s plan to scale the charts appeared to have fizzled out. After two hard-edged singles, the band had come up empty: no hits and anemic record sales. At which point most labels would… Read more »

Destiny's Child Bows At No. 1

R&B superstar group Destiny’s Child did more than just survive in the album rankings this week – it rode an unprecedented wave of buzz and anticipation straight to No. 1, knocking fellow diva Janet Jackson down to second place. The Columbia Records trio’s third album “Survivor” shifted more than 663,000 records in its opening week, according to SoundScan data issued on Wednesday. The album got a healthy shot in the arm from relentless promotion in the weeks leading up to its debut, including copious radio airplay for the album’s title cut and a flurry of MTV specials, culminating in a… Read more »

Peter Buck Arrested For Busting Up First Class

R.E.M guitarist Peter Buck was arrested Saturday (April 21) for allegedly assaulting two British Airways cabin crew members in the first class section of flight BA48 from Seattle to London, Scotland Yard spokesman Chris Cairns said. Buck was met by police at Heathrow Airport Saturday morning around 11 a.m. after the British Airways flight crew radioed ahead that a first class passenger had assaulted members of the cabin crew and upended a trolley. Buck, 44, was detained at the Heathrow police station Saturday, and was released on bail around 9:00 p.m. after being charged for common assault on the crew… Read more »

Hanson, Sweet Go Underneath

Their embraceable debut (1997’s Middle of Nowhere, featuring the Number One single “MMMBop”) sold millions of copies and established Hanson as TRL’s preeminent poster-teens. The grittier follow-up (2000’s This Time Around) alienated bubblegum-dependent younger fans and has yet to go platinum in the states. Now the brothers Hanson – Isaac, Taylor and Zac – are hard at work on a record they hope will marry the success of one to the punchy feel of the other and in the process show the world what they’ve know all along: Hanson are a hard-working, musically gifted and educated rock band. Sessions for… Read more »

Thyret To Resign As WB Records Chairman

Russ Thyret is expected to resign as chairman of Warner Bros. Records next month, making it the first hit in the anticipated shakeup at the music group. The departure of the 30-year Warner Music veteran has been grist for the rumor mill since last summer. The writing on the wall got clearer when it was leaked that Interscope Records president Tom Whalley had been hired as chairman of Warner Bros. Records, even though he won’t arrive until January because Interscope won’t let him out of his contract. Warner Bros. Records president Phil Quartararo is in line to run the show… Read more »
