Artists, Record Execs Spar over Royalties in Calif.

A California lawmaker investigating record company accounting heard one sad song after another on Tuesday as high-profile musicians from the Backstreet Boys to Bing Crosby’s widow accused labels of robbing them of past royalty payments. At a state hearing in Los Angeles, the musicians said they had sold millions of songs or albums only to receive sparse royalties or to be told they actually owed their respective record labels money to recoup advances. State Sen. Kevin Murray, who called the hearing along with fellow Democrat Sen. Martha Escutia, called it a fact-finding event but chided record companies for not making… Read more »

Drowning Pool's Williams Remembered As One Of Rock's Nicest

A day after the body of Drowning Pool frontman Dave Williams was discovered on the band’s tour bus, details remained scarce but memories of Williams as a fun-loving, kind-hearted character abounded. The 30-year-old singer was found in his bunk by members of Drowning Pool’s touring crew Wednesday afternoon, their publicist said. The band was in Manassas, Virginia, on its way to Thursday’s Ozzfest show in Bristow. An autopsy conducted Thursday morning proved inconclusive, according to a Prince William County police spokesperson. A cause of death is expected to be determined from toxicology tests, which generally take four to six weeks.… Read more »

Mexico Radio Stations Ban Some Music

There will be no more drugs and violence on Mexican radio stations in and around Tijuana. Baja California state radio stations signed an agreement Thursday to ban songs known as narco-corridos, and instead have decided to play only songs that promote positive messages and good values. They also urged Spanish-language U.S. stations across the border in California to do the same. Casio Carlos Narvaez, a representative of the Radio and Television Industry Chamber, said stations will not be able to compete if their U.S. counterparts don’t take the same step. “We should promote this self-imposed regulation to avoid converting into… Read more »

Garbage Drummer Vig Suffering From Ear Infection

Garbage drummer Butch Vig is suffering from an acute inner ear infection that has forced him to miss his band’s last few tour dates and possibly more. His condition makes him hypersensitive to sound and noise. Matt Chamberlain has been filling in for Vig, playing a pair of shows in Los Angeles over the weekend. Chamberlain is familiar with Garbage’s material. He filled in for Vig when the Garbage skin basher came down with Hepatitis A last November and also played on several tracks on the band’s latest album, Beautifulgarbage. There’s no word as to whether Vig will be healthy… Read more »

'NSYNC's Lance Bass One Step Closer To Space: 'I Know I Can Do It'

“Let’s just say the doctors know more about me than I know about me,” Lance Bass told reporters convened for a press conference at Moscow’s Savoy Hotel. For the last four months, the ‘NSYNC star has endured a battery of physical examinations in the pursuit of becoming the next civilian in space. On Friday (May 31), he announced that he’d finally passed the medical component of qualifying for a seat on a Russian rocket mission this fall. “With such a thorough physical, you’re going to find things that you might need to take care of,” Bass said, explaining an outpatient… Read more »

They must spend time in a pressurized chamber and undergo a centrifuge test to determine how their bodies would respond to the spacecraft’s liftoff. The results will be forwarded to a state commission, which will deliver a final report on both candidates’ fitness, Malashenkov said. Russia’s space… Read more »

Anastasio Finds Life After Phish

Trey Anastasio spent 17 years ripping genres apart and sticking them back together at odd angles with the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink uber-jam band Phish. So maybe it’s no surprise he’s whipped up another unusual concoction: a jam/swing hybrid dotted with sugary-sweet love songs and chamber music. The self-titled release has the elements you’d expect from Anastasio, from the drawn-out, frenetic jams to the catchy guitar riffs. But it’s also a departure: It’s got horns, it’s got soul, it’s got more horns. It’s clearly not a Phish album hiding under a different name. “I’ve been listening to a lot of big band music,”… Read more »

Ozzy's Ratings Low In Germany As P.O.D., Lenny Kravitz Thrill Festival – Review

You know you’re a long way from home when Groove Armada and Faithless play for wilder crowds than the godfather of heavy metal. “I can’t f-ing hear you!” is Ozzy Osbourne’s standard concert rallying cry, but it took on a new urgency Friday night at the kickoff of the three-day Rock Im Park festival in Nuremberg. As the 53-year-old showman peered out at the half-full Frankenstadion, his famous baffled expression – mouth agape, black-lined eyes open wide, arms extended as though desperately soliciting a hug – looked a bit more confounded than usual. Of course the metal madman delivered, leading… Read more »

'Osbournes' Is Must-See TV For Incubus, Pink, Box Car Racer

“The Osbournes” have not only captivated you, your bleeping grandma and your bleeping hairdresser, but probably your favorite bleeping rock star as well. The most popular series in MTV history, with nearly 8 million viewers a week, has acquired a particularly loyal audience in perhaps the only people who can truly relate to the madness – other musicians. Singer Brandon Boyd said when “The Osbournes” is on, his eyes are… Read more »
