Tragedy struck Smash Mouth this weekend when singer Steve Harwell’s 8-month-old son, Presley Scott Harwell, died of complications from acute lymphatic leukemia.
The child had been ill with the disease for only a few weeks, a publicist for the band’s label said.
The group had arrived at Minot, North Dakota, Friday afternoon, and was scheduled to play a show at the North Dakota State Fair the next day when Harwell received an emergency phone call that his son had been rushed to the hospital, according to TBA Entertainment promoter Robert Romeo.
While Harwell returned home to Las Vegas, his bandmates stayed in Minot, and that night they were told to proceed to Great Falls, Montana, where they had a show scheduled Sunday, Romeo said. But Presley Scott’s condition deteriorated, and he was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
Smash Mouth canceled the Great Falls show and a Tuesday (July 31) gig in Kellogg, Idaho, but have not yet nixed the four remaining shows on their summer tour. The group’s next scheduled performance is Thursday in Tooele, Utah, at the Tooele County Fair.
