On Friday, May 30, Musicians Institute holds an exclusive live concert competition for bands vying to perform on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. The event, held in conjunction with Skinnie Magazine, is limited to bands that include MI students and alumni, with the winner going on to compete against other LA bands at the Key Club on June 12. The champion of that round takes the grand prize: a slot on stage at the June 22 Ventura Seaside Fairgrounds stop of the Vans Warped Tour.
Bands participating in the MI round include Hollywood’s own Stella Vicarious and Among the Infected, Inland Empire favorites 1 Away and Mission: Black from Santa Clarita. These MI-trained musicians carry on a lineage that includes talent as diverse as Brooke White and LaToya London (American Idol), Rivers Cuomo and Brian Bell (Weezer), drummer Ray Luzier (Korn), guitarist Rafael Moreira (Christina Aguilera), guitarist Justin Derrico (Pink) and many others that have passed through the world-renowned contemporary music school during its 30-year history.
MI’s Battle for the Vans Warped Tour is free and open to the public; the show begins at 7:30 p.m. in MI’s main concert hall at 1655 N. McCadden Place, Hollywood, CA 90028.
