Halsey and Bernie Sanders Discuss the Absurdity of Billionaires and the Need for a Wealth Tax

On September 30th, Halsey and Bernie Sanders came together virtually for an intimate conversation to discuss the state of the country and the need to tax the wealthy. The recording artist posted “the first of many more episodes like this one” on Sunday to Twitter, where she talked about her shift in perspectives, from growing up in a lower income family to the wealth she currently has. She said, “having that sort of shift in perspective, given the ability to kind of see things from both sides, […] there’s one thing I know for a fact, and it’s that for me personally, there is no amount of money that I think is worth personally contributing to the alienation, the disenfranchisement […] of hundreds of millions of people across this country.”

During the brief eight minute conversation, the two broke down the huge wealth disparities present in the U.S. and how, in the richest country in the world, so many people still struggle to put food on the table. It turns out that it all comes down to one word: Greed. The Senator from Vermont eloquently stated, “greed is an addiction. And the insanity of it is that there are people out there who have billions of dollars. They couldn’t spend it in a thousand lifetimes. And you know what they’re prepared to do? They’re prepared to cut social security, and Medicare, and Medicaid in order to have billions more.”

The conversation did end on a hopeful note, however. Although Senator Sanders did not win the primary race, he strongly endorses Joe Biden, assuring the audience that Biden is a highly empathetic person who is well aware of the suffering happening in this country.

I’m excited to see what other topics this unlikely duo cover in the episodes to come.
