During the 67th Grammy Awards ceremony, history was made on and off the official February 2 evening broadcast. Of course, Beyonce notably won Album Of The Year with Cowboy Carter and also became the first Black performer to win Best Country Album at the show. Plus, Doechii became the third woman ever to win Best Rap Album. Alongside these mainstream artist wins, the alternative community was eager to see which of their faves would take home a Grammy.
Notably, Knocked Loose and Poppy‘s track “Suffocate” and Spiritbox‘s “Cellar Door” were nominated for Best Metal Performance. (And it’s clear many mainstream music journalists still don’t “get” metal, as one red carpet interviewer called Courtney LaPlante “Poppy” and LaPlante just played along.) Their wins would usher in the first woman to secure a Grammy in the metal category.

However, Gojira ended up taking the metal performance award (and their first Grammy) home with their 2024 Paris Olympics performance of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ca Ira!).” And uniquely, the French metal band did make history with the help of collaborator opera singer Marina Viotti, who is now officially the first woman to win this metal Grammy. Additionally, Gojira is the first French metal band to win Best Metal Performance, though they were also nominated in 2017.
Additionally, in their acceptance speech, the band said, “We are extremely excited to receive this award. We had the privilege to perform at the Olympic ceremony with Marina and Victor. So this is a great day for us, obviously. We want to dedicate this award to all the bands that are pushing the boundaries. Support your local artists, support your local bands, because that’s where it’s at and they’re inspiring us to continue. So, thank you very much for this!”
