Godsmack Promises Safe Show During Tour

Godsmack is taking a truckload of pyrotechnics with them on the road this summer, but you can be sure it’s a safe show.

According to bassist Robbie Merrill, the group uses an expert company.

“The company we use basically wrote the book on it. All the fire departments go to them because it’s unknown,” he said. “It’s as safe as it possibly can because us, being in the band, are the first to get hurt. We have to have a lot of faith in the company that we use.”

Drummer Shannon Larkin says he’s usually protected by his drum kit from most of the pyrotechnics, but not all of them.

“I am closest to the flames, live on stage. When we play and it’s real hot, like some of the Florida shows, man, the flames come on and you got to put your face down, cause it’s so hot,” he said. “But when I was in Boston, it was chilly. When the flames came on, ahhh, it felt great.”

Merrill said he’s never gotten hurt from the pyrotechnics.

“The guy is almost right on stage with us, and there has been times when I forgot about a certain little gag. There’s green tape going around there. If I’m in that zone, he won’t fire it off. You might look at him ‘What the… I knew it was there.’ ‘You’re too close.’ Safety first, show second.”
