Crazy Town Moving Away From 'Butterfly' Sound On Next LP

Crazy Town will risk alienating their “Butterfly”-loving pop fans with a “more dynamic and sophisticated” follow-up to The Gift of Game, they say.

“We’re gonna step out into hip-hop more, we’re gonna step out into the heavy side more, we’re gonna step out into the smooth side more,” vocalist/producer Epic Mazur said.

“We’ll see what happens with a pop audience based on buying that one song. We know they don’t last – we know they’re fickle people.”

MC Shifty Shellshock said the band has about 30 songs written for its second album and plans to demo material on the tour bus over the next few months. Currently on a monthlong headlining tour, Crazy Town will hit the studio shortly after Ozzfest wraps in mid-August, he said.

The seven-piece band plans to record about 20 songs so there will be tracks leftover to use for soundtracks and other compilations. The band hopes to recruit Outkast and Tha Liks to appear on the album, Shellshock said.

Working on new material won’t be the only goal for Crazy Town while on Ozzfest. “Basically we’re gonna just try to complete [the tour],” Shellshock said. “There are a lot of kids that didn’t get to see us last year due to my bad behavior.”

Crazy Town’s management pulled the band off the 2000 edition of Ozzfest after only two weeks so that a relapsing Shellshock could enter rehab. The singer, who was going through a breakup, was arrested after throwing a tantrum in which he threw a chair through a window.

“A little less drugs and a little more spirituality and music” will help him see the tour through this time, he said.

“We’re more like a family now, and we look after each other in that regard,” Mazur added. “Everybody’s just learned a lot and grown up a lot.”
