The makers of the upcoming “American Pie 2” have ordered a slice of 3 Doors Down’s debut album – with something extra on top.
The Mississippi rockers are writing new lyrics for “Be Like That,” a track from their multiplatinum debut, The Better Life that will be released as the first single from the movie’s soundtrack, the band’s management said. 3 Doors Down also plan to shoot a video for the heartland-rock ballad that will feature the “American Pie 2” cast, according to the film’s music supervisor, Gary Jones.
“We spoke to the guys in the band and they’re totally on board, and that’s one of the main reasons we chose to do it,” Jones said. “It’s a perfect band for ‘American Pie 2’.”
Like 1999’s original “American Pie,” which included songs by Tonic, Sugar Ray and Blink-182, the sequel will be packed full of potential rock hits, according to Jones, who’s put together soundtracks for the likes of “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” “The Next Best Thing” and “The Family Man.”
Third Eye Blind, Uncle Kracker, Alien Ant Farm, American Hi-Fi and Oleander are all in talks to contribute songs on the soundtrack, which doesn’t yet have a set release date, Jones said.
The movie itself will prominently feature “Be Like That” and will also include a wide selection of current pop and rock in an effort to capture the movie’s teen milieu.
The film, due in August, will revisit the lives and relationships of the original movie’s characters when they return home for the summer after their first year of college. The full cast of “American Pie” – a film that helped give rise to a new teen-comedy wave – is expected to return for the sequel.
3 Doors Down also recently recorded yet another version of “Be Like That” – an acoustic rendition – for release to radio. The song follows the band’s breakthrough single, “Kryptonite,” and the follow-ups “Loser” and “Duck and Run.”
