Fresh off of the release of their anthemic new full-length album Ghost Town Road and a standout live session at idobi Radio Studios, where they performed their 2024 hit single “Night Shift,” Smallpools took us on a nostalgic ride by performing their breakout 2013 hit “Dreaming.”
“I guess we wrote the songs thinking they were good enough to put out into the world, so we hoped that someone would care and like them,” vocalist Sean Scanlon shared with Fuse TV in August 2013 following the release of the Gold-certified track in May 2013. “We spent so much time writing, and scrutinizing, and re-writing the songs, that we kind of lose perspective on what the songs even sound like anymore. It’s impossible for us to hear a song as a first listener, ya know.”
“There’s a lot of different ways to take [‘Dreaming,’]” he continues. “You’re a part of something, or you’re on a mission with a friend… doing something, and you think you have everything figured out. But it all goes haywire, and there’s this moment of ‘Oh crap, I don’t want to be here anymore,’ and you’re hoping it’s a dream sequence.”
In their idobi Radio session, Smallpools strip away the glistening guitar tones, rhythmic synths, and driving percussion of the original, transforming their infectious high-energy anthem into an intimate acoustic rendition that highlights their versatility. Sean Scanlon’s raw, unfiltered vocals take center stage in the studio, revealing the vulnerability of the track as his delivery dances alongside delicate acoustic strums.
